June 1 - 7 2008 Andy Walton’sWeekly World Watch “If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.” Ezekiel 33:6

  2. What is this world watch all about? I decided each week to look at key events that had happened in that week and look at them with the Bible in hand. I hope to build up a picture of Gods hand working in the affairs of this world bringing about that day when all nations will be gathered to Jerusalem to battle which will be brought to end when the Lord Jesus Christ physically returns from heaven to set up Gods kingdom. The key areas which will crop up time and again will be • Israel – Middle East the growing conflict • Europe – the developing union / political and religious • Russia – continued turning back to anti west ways • The development of King of South – US & UK • Declining moral standards and increasing violence.   3. Weekly Developments These are just a few of the events that have caught my eye in the previous week. It is in no way meant to be exhaustive – just a look at those events I saw as significant from a Bible viewpoint. Headlines These are always headlines printed in the newspaper – the date is always given and which paper. Normally the Daily Telegraph. (DT) Event This is usually the newspapers take on the events that have happened. It will always be a direct quote from the newspaper. Comment This is my take on why it is interesting from a Bible point of view. The idea of this weekly world watch is to give a quick Biblical perspective without going into detail. If more detail is needed please email me. Bible Quote This is normally one verse which backs up why the event that has occurred is interesting from a Biblical perspective. Israeli minister threatens Iran Headline Israeli minister threatens Iran Headline BBConline June 6 2008 Event A top Israeli official has said that if Iran continues with its alleged nuclear arms programme, Israel will attack it. Speaking to Yediot Ahronot newspaper, Deputy Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz said sanctions on Iran were ineffective. "Attacking Iran, in order to stop its nuclear plans, will be unavoidable," he said. Mr Mofaz is one of three deputy prime ministers and the transport minister. Earlier this week, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Iran's nuclear programme must be stopped by what he termed all possible means. Comment In just a few days this week both the Prime Minister of Israel, Ehud Olmert and one the deputy Prime Ministers have both threatened to attack Iran. Mr Olmert visiting America spoke of “an urgent need for more drastic and robust action”. He met George Bush on Wednesday to discuss the issue. These comments have been the strongest yet from Israel to Iran. They indicate that time is running out and that Israel will eventually act perhaps alone. Does the Bible indicate such a course of action for Israel? No, not specifically. In the Bible Iran is spoken of as Persia and the Medes. But also as Elam. On the fall of the Assyrian empire, Elam passed into the hands of the Persians. The capital of Elam during its entire history was Shushan (Susa). Elam was situated in south western Iran. It is in this very area that key nuclear targets are to be found. We then read in the verse below that in the latter days Elam will be consumed! Bible Quote Jeremiah 49 37 For I will cause Elam to be dismayed before their enemies, and before them that seek their life: and I will bring evil upon them, even my fierce anger, saith the LORD; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them: 39 But it shall come to pass in the latter days, that I will bring again the captivity of Elam, saith the LORD. Oil price soars as US woes mount Headline Oil price soars as US woes mount Headline BBConline June 7 2008 Event The price of oil has made a record jump to nearly $139 a barrel, amid reports it could reach $150 by July because of rising demand and political tension. Crude in New York gained more than $10 - its biggest-ever one-day rise. The spike in oil prices coincided with a dollar slump, plummeting share prices on Wall Street and US unemployment suffering its biggest rise in 20 years. The market was also responding to a statement by Israel's transport minister that an attack on Iran was "unavoidable" after sanctions to prevent Tehran from developing its nuclear capability had failed. Comment The price of oil has often increased dramatically at times of war or extreme tension in the Middle East. Fighting between Israel and the Arabs in 1973 sent oil rising 400% in 6 months. Note the remark above that one reason for the huge rise in oil prices this week was put down to Israel's remarks on attacking Iran. Just suppose Israel does attack Iran. What would happen to oil prices then? Who would the world blame for an even greater cost of fuel? Israel would be to blame. It would be their fault many people would say. It is also interesting that America is weakening at this time. The economy is probably in recession, the dollar is falling in value, unemployment is rising fast. The army too, though huge is very stretched at this time. All of this leads to a weakening of America’s position in the world and makes it harder for them to put pressure on other nations. America looks in a weak position at the time of the end according the scriptures. The king of the south is defeated. The young lions in Ezekiel 38 (of which the USA is one) can do no more than comment when Russia invades Israel. Bible Quote Deuteronomy 28  65 And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind: People blame the Jews!

Headline Nato warns Russia over Abkhazia Headline BBConline June 3 2008 Event Nato's secretary general has demanded that Russia withdraw troops it sent to the disputed breakaway Georgian province of Abkhazia last week. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer accused Russia of breaching Georgia's sovereignty by sending in military railway personnel. Mr de Hoop Scheffer said the Russian move was "contributing to instability in what is already a volatile area". Abkhazia broke away from Georgia in a war in the early 1990s after the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. Russia announced on Saturday that it was sending 300 members of an unarmed unit from the army's railway force to the province to help carry out repairs on the network, labelling the move a humanitarian effort. Georgia responded that Russia is planning a military intervention in the province. Comment This is a small step but perhaps significant. Russia is beginning to send troops in the guise of humanitarian effort into another sovereign nations territory. It is quite obvious that Nato sees it for what it is – military aggression and has demanded that Russia withdraw the troops. There is little chance that Russia will listen to Nato on this subject. Russia is in effect backing Abkhazia’s claim that it (like Kosovo) is a separate nation to Georgia. Russia was infuriated when Kosovo was given independence and this is Russia’s way of getting back at the West. What is significant to us is that Russia will descend through this territory on the way down to Israel. When they do they will come like a whirlwind and none shall stop them. Headline Call for EU to build its own army Headline BBConline June 5 2008 Event An influential Polish member of the European parliament has called for the EU to develop "hard power" and spend more money to build a European army. Foreign affairs committee chairman Jacek Saryusz-Wolski also wants the European parliament to have the final say on deployments under the EU flag. The French have said beefing up the EU's military capability will be a key part of their six-month presidency. The BBC has been told their plans also include a new EU military headquarters. Other items on the French list of proposals involve calling upon all EU countries to increase spending on defence to meet a new target of perhaps 6% of Gross Domestic Product. Comment The main proposals for this are coming from the French who shortly take over the presidency of the EU. The proposals, circulated to European governments in a five-page document detailing Paris's security policy priorities, include common EU funding of military operations, a European fleet of military transport aircraft, European military satellites, a European defence college, and the development of exchange programmes for officers among EU states. We know from the scriptures that Europe will be a united fighting force and will ultimately make war against Christ when he has returned. This is made clear in Revelation 17 where we read of “the beast” which has 10 horns. The 10 horns are 10 kings that give their power to the beast. The beast is a continuation of the 4th beast in Daniel 7. The 4th beast is the empire of Rome. We see in Revelation that the 4th beast comes out of a bottomless pit. I.e. The Roman Empire in some way is restored. We see Europe as this restored Roman empire now wanting an army! Headline Mahmoud Ahmadinejad attacks Jews at UN food summit in Rome Headline Daily Telegraph June 3 2008 Event Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, has used his first trip to Western Europe to launch a new attack against Jews. Arriving in Rome for a United Nations summit, Mr Ahmadinejad said: "The people of Europe have suffered the most harm from Zionists and today the costs of that falsified regime, whether political or economic, are on Europe's shoulders." Comment The Iranian president during his speech blamed the Jews for the food price increases the world is seeing!! As we mentioned on a previous slide it might not be too long before the Jews are blamed for the fuel price increases too. Fuel and food are the two things this world needs desperately and a scapegoat is often required when governments come under immense pressure. The Israeli ambassador to Italy protested Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's attendance at the international conference in Rome. He deplored the fact that Ahmadinejad had been invited to the Rome-based international agency. "To imagine on the podium of a U.N. organization a leader who calls for the destruction of a member state is a disgrace for every democrat," he said. We read in Psalm 83 of certain nations of the world that want to destroy Israel. Note that in verse 8 it says “Assur is joined with them”. Assur is normally translated Assyria. Assyria once controlled some of the territory of modern day Iran and in the context of this Psalm 83 seems to indicate Iran. We see Iran working with Syria, the Palestinians and the inhabitants of Tyre (Hezbollah) with the one goal of brining Israel to an end. The end of the Psalm though speaks of these nations being confounded and men knowing that Yahweh is God. Bible Quote Psalm 83 4 They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance. 7 Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; the Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre; 8 Assur also is joined with them Ahmadinejad attacks Jews
