  3. Defensive Philosophy Keep it simple Know your position (alignment, technique, and responsibility) Know the weakness of the defense. Know your opponent Stunt as little as possible Get to the ball and make the play

  4. But most importantly,HIT!

  5. PREPARATION • Scouting – Jim Smith (4 to 5 films on each opponent) • We expect our players to study film. • Jim or I will break down the films (by hand) • I compile the Tendencies by formation. Draw up plays. • The staff meets to discuss defense. • In practice we rep & reinforce, rep & reinforce the opponent offense.

  6. TEAM TACKLING • Proper technique 2 days / week • Four Stations – four coaches • 1. Sideline Tackling • 2. Open field tackling • 3. Tackling Dummy • 4. Agile hole tackling • 1/2 minute / station – Total 6 to 8 minutes • Substitute pursuit drills on days not tackling

  7. GROUP DEFENSE • 20 Minute period • Base sets, formations, and keys • Alignment and Coverage • D – Line, Linebackers, and D – Backs at technique stations • Bagology • Reads & key drills with all players • Script plays for scout team

  8. TEAM DEFENSE • 25 – 30 minute time period • Script all plays include punt blocks and P.A.T. • Tendency plays, routes, situational, down and distance, and specials • Learn adjustments and stunts
