  1. Linux on System z: The Next Frontier for the Mainframe Cameron Seay, NC A & T State University ECC Conference June 10, 2041

  2. In this presentation: The motivation for including Linux on z in our Program Linux in our Enterprise Systems Curriculum Linux-related projects now and in the near future The Road Ahead

  3. NC A & T State Univ: Located in Greensboro, NC, enrollment appx 10,500. One of the 100+ Historically Black Colleges and Universities Established in 1891 as a Land Grant College Still produces more African American engineers than any school in the world I am in the Computer Systems Technology Dept in the School of Technology www.ncat.edu

  4. The motivation for including Linux on z in our ES Program: We have been very successful in placing students in ES positions: While z/OS is stable we see zLinux as having potential for exponential growth in the next 3-5 years Linux is the foundation for cloud computing, zLinux is merely an extension of it. zLinux is an excellent entre for high school students to ES

  5. Linux in our Enterprise Systems Curriculum NC A & T has a z9 on loan from IBM (18 engines, 128 GB real storage, 4 TB of DASD with another 40 TB on the way). We install z/VM (5.4) as the foundation for every LPAR and put whatever we want in the guests For our z/OS courses we create z/OS guests. This way each student can have their own “lpar”. We create as many guests as we need for our VM courses Each student has first and second level guests.

  6. Linux in our Enterprise Systems Curriculum Our focus is actually on using z/VM as a vehicle to deploy Linux, NOT on z/VM admin We cover virtualization concepts, CP/CMS basics, Linux installation, and there is usually a server deployment project We also use this as an opportunity to deepen cloud skill by having the student write Web based data management applications in php or Java.

  7. Linux-related projects now and in the near future Linux is flexible and pervasive... Big Data Analytics (A & T and Univ of Puerto Rico) Banner Proof of Concept Other Linux based business application POCs Oracle and Linux consolidation State of NC MOU (training NC employees on zLinux) www.ncat.edu

  8. Linux-related projects now and in the future Linux an z a great way to introduce K-12 students to the platform Raspberry Pi projects can be tied to z on the mainframe (via a re-compile of Raspian) Vance County STEM project “I CAN CODE!” www.ncat.edu

  9. The Road Ahead: EVENTUALLY… we will acquire a BC 12 or an EC 12 Projects on Power & z System z on Demand Connecting smaller colleges via A & T and other AI Schools Whatever in the heck industry will fund! www.ncat.edu
