  2. Question • Have you ever been scared and excited at the same time? If you have, you’ll understand what I’m going to tell you about. If you haven’t, I think you’ll enjoy this story.

  3. Definition • Inspiration, a sudden brillian idea, was the reason for what happened that day.

  4. Dialogue or Direct Quote • “What in the world did you do that for,” yelled my brother.

  5. Exaggeration(hyperbole) • My mom had told me a thousand times to clean up my room.

  6. Words in Capitals, Bold Print or Italics • KEEP OUT! The sign warned trespassers, but we didn’t take any notice of it.

  7. Addressing the Reader Directly • I’m sure you know what it’s like to feel as though everyone is staring at you and your face turns red. So let me tell you about an embarrassing moment that happened to me.

  8. Exclamation • Wow! Was I in for a surprise! When the telephone rang …

  9. Onomatopoeia(word sounds like meaning) • Snap! Crackle! Pop! That was the sound of the dry twigs beneath our feet as we ran through the woods at the end of our street.

  10. Thoughtshot(flashback, flashforward or internal dialogue) • Ouch! I’m on the hard, cold sidewalk. What happened? How did I fall?

  11. “Jump Right In”(start with action) • I crumpled a twenty-dollar bill and crammed it into the front pocket of my jean shorts. The rest of my money was spread over other places on my body.
