  1. 1st FOUNDATION-----------Leaders Embodying the Kingdom of God

  2. Leaders mold congregations • The leader's task is to so shape the culture and ethos of the Church that it becomes a context in which the dynamic of cooperating with the Holy Spirit of God may take place. • Leaders must therefore be living models of what it means to follow Jesus Christ, for only then can they shape the congregation into a dynamic expression of the Kingdom of God.

  3. Embodiment of Kingdom Reality as the essence of Christian leadership

  4. A variety of leadership roles, but a common factor… • Embodiment • People in whom others can see the incarnate reality of what it means to live and work in friendship and partnership with the living God

  5. Jesus our ‘pioneer’ embodied the Kingdom of God • “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” • John 1:14 • “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.” • John 14:9 • “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” • John 10:27

  6. The First Disciples embodying in themselves the Kingdom of God

  7. The first disciples • Peter’s Pentecost proclamation – faithful and anointedActs 2:1-41 • Early Church – teaching, relationships and miracles Acts 2:43,47 • Paul – a living model of discipleship1 Corinthians 11:1 ; Acts 26:29

  8. The historical Church • St Benedict – humble godliness • John Calvin – life governed by Scripture • Martin Luther – justification by faith • Mother Teresa – living compassion • Martin Luther King Jr. – racial justice • Hudson Taylor – evangelistic outreach • …and those whose lives embodied God’s reign and led us into his Kingdom

  9. Today’s Church • We can only be ambassadors of that to which we already belong • Leaders inevitably shape the culture of the Church • Are we shaping that culture into something that is a living expression of the reign of God? • Or is it an expression of some different agenda?

  10. Without leaders who embody the Kingdom of God, the Church no longer grows

  11. When leaders do embody the Kingdom of God • The congregation becomes a dynamic expression of that Kingdom, a fusion of the human and divine • Programs, worship, committees, relationships accomplish their purpose • Jesus is experienced as Prophet, Priest and King • For these things to happen, leadership is critical

  12. When leaders do not embody the Kingdom of God • Dynamic cooperation with the Spirit cannot take place • We become merely a well-oiled human organization • Warning • Numerical increase is not de-facto proof that a congregation is functioning as the Body of Christ • Eg: numerically growing Muslim, Mormon, Hindu or Scientologist congregations !

  13. The challenge… • We need men and women who are able to embody the reality of the Kingdom of God and thus grow the Church • So… • How does Jesus say we should grow such leaders?
