Objectives • Renaissance is a new software technology for a new genre of edutainment applications featuring high quality graphical interfaces, networked cooperative environments, scientifically validated contents and an innovative pedagogical approach • Key research tasks are knowledge-base management, intelligent evaluation agents, 3D virtual communities. • The prototype will be a typical renaissance court. Users will play roles, live in the court and experience the social conventions of the period. • The project has a duration of 18 months, from 1st January 2000 to 30th June 2001. Milestones • software environment and methodology for a new genre of multi-user Internet game, based on the simulation of an historical environment • intelligent agents checking in real-time user actions according to historical social and behavioural conventions • historically validated assets and a knowledge-base on historical social rules will be created • a prototype typical Renaissance court will be built • web site, promotional material, web user group • total budget 2000 kEURO, funding 1000 kEURO RENAISSANCE project IST-1999-12163

Problems encountered • Knowledge base creation methodology: information in the knowledge base should be easily manipulated and assessed by content experts • Communication among system components: evaluation engine - virtual community remote server - 3D local engine • Bibliographic work: history cannot be so easily reduced to a sequence of algorithms!
