  3. Welcome the mealworms…! • Care of living things—taking care of our mealworms… • Journal • Magnifiers • Paper

  4. Observe & draw a diagram • Draw an outline • Look for EVERY detail, every feature • Label the diagram • How do they move? • Write down the questions that come up as you observe…

  5. Is the mealworm really a worm? • Why do we say mealworms are insects? • What did you notice about how the mealworms move? (volunteers?!?) • How do you think mealworms find food?

  6. How do mealworms find food? • Make a small pile of bran • Place the mealworm at the other end of the paper • Trace the mealworm’s path • How would you answer the question now?

  7. Now it is your turn…. • Design a simple test to learn more about mealworm behavior • POSSIBLE fair tests: Do meal worms prefer: • Dark or light? • Wet or dry? • A certain color? • Smooth or rough surface? • …….come up with your own idea!

Creating fair tests with animals… • MUST give choice if the animal is to show a preference; • Describe/ diagram what animal does as completely as possible • Control conditions as much as possible • To know if behavior is different you have to know what is typical behavior • Do the same experiment many times
