  1. Liberty and Justice FOR ALL Should Gay-Marriage be legalized? Alysa Myrup

  2. History of the LGBTQ • 1970: Same-sex couples begin seeking marriage licenses • 1983: The 'spousal' rights of same-sex couples becomes an issue • Sep. 21, 1996: Clinton signs Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) • May 17, 2004: First legal gay marriage in the US • Nov. 4, 2008: California voters approve a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage (Prop 8) • Aug. 4, 2010: US District Judge rules CA Proposition 8 unconstitutional * • Feb. 23, 2011: Obama declares Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional, directs Department of Justice to stop defending the law in court • July 19, 2011: President Barack Obama supports Dianne Feinstein's bill to repeal Defense of Marriage Act

  3. Gay-Marriage Today • As of March 1, 2012 Gay-Marriage has been legalized in 8 US states: - Massachusetts- Connecticut- Iowa- Vermont- New Hampshire- New York- Washington (effective June 7, 2012)- Maryland (effective Jan. 1, 2013) and the District of Columbia • 30 states have constitutional amendments banning Gay-Marriage

  4. The “Nay-Sayers” Marriage’s definition should not be changed

  5. Why Gay-Marriage is “Wrong” • God has created a single man and a single woman to be united in matrimony and only this combination of people should be given such a privilege • It Imposes Its Acceptance on All Society • It Defeats the State’s Purpose of Benefiting Marriage • It Does Not Create a Family but a Naturally Sterile Union • It Validates and Promotes the Homosexual Lifestyle • It Violates Natural Law • It Offends God

  6. Two “Nay-Sayers” In The News Rick Santorum— Chris Christie— • “I believe that marriage is not 50 things. You can’t have different marriage laws in different states. Ultimately, marriage is what marriage is.” • “It will have a detrimental affect on ‘traditional marriage’ and the meaning will be lost.” • “Gay-Marriage is against nature.” • “The only way we have to amend our constitution is by referendum –let’s put it on the ballot, let the people decide.” • “I won’t compromise my principles for politics.” • “And I tell people that. And my friends, whether they be homosexual or not, they know me and they know I am not bigoted.”

  7. The Advocates Marriage should be a privilege for everyone

  8. Legalize Gay-Marriage • Marriage equality would build on America’s tradition of moving civil rights forward and erasing the inequities of the past • Separate is not equal • Public support is growing • Marriage provides families stability and security • The Constitution promises liberty and justice to all Americans, not just the majority- Amendment XIV • Politics and Religion are separate • “We don't get to vote on their marriage so they shouldn't get to vote on ours.”

  9. Two Supporting Governors In The News Christine Gregoire— Martin O'Malley— • “I came to realize the religions can decide what they want to do, but it is not O.K. for the state to discriminate.” • “Some say domestic partnerships are the same as marriage. That’s a version of the discriminatory ‘separate but equal’ argument.” • "To me, the state's responsibility is to absolutely ensure equality. The other is a religious issue, and I leave it to the churches to make that call about marriage." • “We are a people of many different religions and many different faiths. The only way forward in a pluralistic society of diverse faiths such as ours is to have laws that protect and respect the freedom of all, equally.” • “…our children deserve the opportunity to live in a loving, caring, committed, and stable home, protected equallyunder the law.”

  10. Love is Love • Although it is not certain when justice for all will settle in to the US, it is certain that it will happen • The two main solutions towards victory for marriage equality are simply to educate and time • People have become more accepting towards others, more people—both gay and straight—are advocating towards the fight for Gay-Marriage equality
