  2. What is it? • Karr (1981) developed an Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) to evaluate biological conditions of rivers and streams – primarily in the mid-west.

  3. What is biological integrity? • The ability to support and to maintain a balanced, integrated, adaptive community of organisms having a species composition, diversity, and functional organization comparable to that of the natural habitat of the region (Karr and Dudley 1981).
