  1. Bellwork #1:SW apply their current knowledge to a pre-test in LA 8.SW discuss current norms we will use and apply in our classroom. • What rules (norms) should our class follow during class time and when we are in groups, during SSR/AoW time, and during testing. Use a Tree Map to outline your ideas (4 columns). • When you are done, share your ideas with the person next to you.

  2. Bellwork #2:SW respond to a writing impromptu essay during class time.SW discuss the syllabus, rules, and expectations for this semester. • What are your goals for school this semester? What do you want to accomplish by the end of the school year before graduation? • Create a circle map of your goals.

Bellwork #3:SW discuss what satire is and how they see it used within A Modest Proposal.SW begin reading and discussing A Modest Proposal and the use of the three appeals. • In your own words, define Satire (Hint: think of Shrek). • List some examples you have seen in stories, poems, or movies you have seen (At least 3).

  4. Bellwork #4:SW finish reading and discussing A Modest Proposal and the use of the three appeals. • Which appeal influenced you the most when reading A Modest Proposal? Why?

  5. Bellwork #5:SW T2T on an article provided to them on the topic of FrankensteinSW begin group work on expert folders for Frankenstein. • Create a bubble map on Frankenstein. Remember use only adjectives to describe the story/novel.

  6. Bellwork # 6:SW create thinking maps to go with their articles and apply three concepts from their individual articles to be added to their group circle map.SW finish up constructing their group circle maps on Frankenstein. • List three new findings you have learned so far from your individual articles or group work so far.

Bellwork #7:SW take notes through a gallery walk and discuss their findings.SW take guided notes based on Frankenstein to fill in any information not covered. • Write Gallery walk for Frankenstein in your bellwork. • Then Label Gallery Walk in your unit notes and take notes as you walk around to the different circle maps.

  11. Bellwork #11:SW read and discuss concepts in Chapter 4 of Frankenstein.SW apply a visualization technique to the reading. • What does Victor want to accomplish in life? What does Victor’s mother want to happen between him and Elizabeth? Why? • HW: Read Chapters 5-8, discussion questions, and a Flow map based upon the sequence of plot in these chapters.

  12. Bellwork #12:SW recap and review chapters 5-8 of Frankenstein.SW work in groups to create a debate based upon whose fault lies the death of William and Justine’s. Put the following events in the order they happened in chapters 5-8: • Justine Moritz was convicted and hung for the murder of William Frankenstein. • Victor creates a beautiful and disdainful creature. • Victor goes home to Geneva, Switzerland to console his family of their recent loss. • Victor contracted a fever for several months and was confined to bed. • The monster is no where to be found in Victor’s apartment. • Henry Clerval came to school to be educated with Victor.

How can you relate the following section of the poem “Ancient Mariner” to Victor’s life, as he repeated these lines in chapter 5: “Like one who, on a lonely road, Doth walk in fear and dread, And, having once turned around, walks on, And turns no more his head; Because he knows a frightful fiend Doth close behind him tread.” • H.W- Read chapters 13-14.

  16. Bellwork #16:SW recap chapters 13 &14 of Frankenstein.SW read, interpret, and analyze Chapter 15 of Frankenstein and apply their reading to three column notes. • Describe what the creature is experiencing out their on his own. What does he have to do with Safie and Felix?

Bellwork #18:SW read, interpret, and analyze Chapter 20 of Frankenstein and apply the information to three column notes.SW apply their knowledge to a quiz on Chapters 10-19. • Take 15 minutes to read a novel you chose for SSR. • On a separate piece of paper summarize what you have read and use one of the following sentence stems: • While I was reading I felt….. • I was surprised by….. • Because of _____ I assumed….I • I wonder if …..
