  2. Setting the stage for the establishment of the ACHR 1948 7 April 1948: WHO Constitution comes into force 7 April is now World Health Day Article 2 of the Constitution: to promote and conduct research in the field of health

  3. Setting the stage for the establishment of the ACHR 1949 2nd World Health Assembly adopted Guiding principles on research: • research and coordination of research are essential functions of WHO • first priority should be given to research directly related to the programmes of WHO • research should be supported in existing institutions and should form part of the duties of field teams supported by WHO • all locally supported research should be so directed as to encourage assumption of responsibility for its continuance by local agencies where indicated • WHO should not consider at the present time the establishment, under its own auspices, of international research institutions Creation of WHO Collaborating Centres – today number more than 900 with 500+ active in research

  4. Setting the stage for the establishment of the ACHR 1949 WHO and UNESCO create CIOMS, The Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences

  5. 1959 The 12th World Health Assembly sees the establishment of Advisory Committee on Medical Research (ACMR) and the Special Account for Medical Research

  6. 1959 Functions of the ACHR: • Advise the Director-General on the general orientation of WHO’s research • Advise on the formulation of global priorities for health research • Review research activities, monitor their execution and evaluate their results • Formulate ethical criteria applicable to these research activities • Take a prominent part in the harmonization of WHO’s research efforts between the country, regional and interregional levels, and in their effective global synthesis

  8. 1965 Plans for a world health research centre rejected by the World Health Assembly

  9. 1965 Founding of The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) to coordinate international efforts on cancer research

  10. 1972 Establishment of the Expanded Programme of Research in Human Reproduction

  11. 1975 Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) is announced

  12. 1976 Decentralization of research policy and establishment of 5 Regional ACHRs ACMR discuss and recommend the need for WHO to create a Special Programme for health systems research

  13. 1986 ADG on ACMR being renamed ACHR: Their distinguished members were very far from the stereotyped image of the scientists shut up in their ivory tower…..they were deeply involved in world health problems and in finding solutions…

  14. 1990 ACHR lead the Technical Discussions at the 43rd WHA on the "Role of Health Research in the Strategy for Health for All by the year 2000” Support essential health research and build national research capacity Identify appropriate methods for trend assessment and priority setting Translate research goals and priorities into Health for All

  15. 1993 ACHR publishes Research for Health: Principles, Perspectives, Strategies Formation of the Council on Health Research and Development (COHRED)

  16. 1994 The ACHR and CIOMS involved in a number of collaborations over the years

  17. 1997 ACHR Meeting at WHO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland

  18. 1998 ACHR publish A Research Policy Agenda for Science and Technology to support Global Health Development Establishment of the Global Forum for Health Research AHPSR formed by the Global Forum and hosted by WHO

  19. 2000 ACHR Meeting

  20. 2002 Report released on Genomics and World Health

  21. 2003 ACHR Meeting in June at WHO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland

  22. 2007 ACHR advise on creation of the WHO Strategy on Research for Health

  23. 2008 The 50th Session of the ACHR in Geneva, Switzerland

  24. 2009 52nd Session of the ACHR in conjunction with the 43rd Session of the PAHO ACHR Held in Panama City, Panama
