Interactions between RSVA and Rhino Virus Siobhan Bailey, Graham Medley, Patrick Munywoki, James Nokes University of Warwick and KEMRI-Wellcome, Kilifi, Kenya Siobhan.Bailey@warwick.ac.uk Introduction RSV is the major viral respiratory pathogen in young children across the globe. Despite a great deal of research an effective vaccine has yet to be developed and much of the work currently being undertaken is focused on finding a vaccine. Rhinoviruses (RV) commonly infect humans and are the major cause of the common cold. The interaction between RSV and RV within households (HH) was investigated using data collected in Kenya by Patrick Munywoki. Nasal swabs were taken from every person in the household each week over a period of 27 weeks and tested for the presence of RSV and RV amongst others. Results - When RSV is introduced in a HH, there was a noticeable reduction in the prevalence of RV in 58% (11/19) of HH. The comparison between the HH level interactions is shown below Graph of households in which RV prevalence decreases after the first time RSVA is present for two consecutive weeks (week 0) Graph of households in which RV prevalence does not decrease after the first time RSVA is present for two consecutive weeks • Conclusions • There is good evidence for some form of interaction between RSVA and RV within households which results in a decrease in RV prevalence when a RSVA is present for two or more consecutive weeks • HH size and week at which RV first occurs have an impact on whether RSVA presence effects RV prevalence • Households in which an RV prevalence decreases after time 0 tend to have a smaller proportion of children infected.
