  2. Overview: • The 5 Good Emperors were a line of great emperors following right after one another. The 5 Good Emperors period started in 96 A.D and ended in 180 A.D.

The first Good Emperor Nerva; • He appointed Trajan as his successor. • He tried to assist the poor by buying land from the wealthy and then dividing it up between the poor. • His rule ended in 98 A.D. • Nerva came into power in 96 A.D. • He was the first of the Great Emperors. • He was 60 yeas old. • He was a senator. • All of his support came from the Senate.

The second Good Emperor Trajan; • He died while returning to Italy from the east in 117 A.D. • He came into power in 98 A.D. • He was born in Spain. • He spent most of his life on campaigns and was named Optimus “beast” by the Senate. • It was said that 5,000 kids received from him their “daily allowance” of food.

  5. The third Good Emperor Hadrian; • This wall was made to keep barbarians out of Roman Britain. (Rome attacked part of Britain and once they had conquered it they named it Roman Britain) • His rule ended in 131 A.D. • He came into rule in 117 A.D. • He was the second emperor that was known for his many building projects. • He built he famous wall across Britain.

  6. The fourth Good Emperor Pius; • Once Hadrian died, Pius stepped into his fathers place and took on the role as Emperor. • His rule ended in 161 A.D • He came into power in 131 A.D. • After Hadrian’s adopted son, Versus, died Hadrian adopted Pius as a son and a successor. • As part of the deal, Pius adopted future Emperor Aurelius.

  7. The fifth Good Emperor Aurelius; • His rule ended in 180 A.D. • He came into power in 161 A.D. • Adopted son of Pius. • He was a philosopher and Roman Emperor. • He wrote Meditations. • Was later overpowered by his son, Commodus.
