Data Centers in the News • Big Data / Data Center: Big Data causing data center crunch • http://www.cio.com/article/698033/Explosion_in_Big_Data_Causing_Data_Center_Crunch?taxonomyId=1375   • Obviously, if you try to put 10 pounds of sand in a five pound bag, you will get sand over all yourself. The same thing is happening to many data centers whose designers failed to anticipate the dramatic growth of Big Data (this is the development that IBM has been talking about for the past few years): • Global business has been caught off-guard by the recent explosion in data volumes and is trying to cope with short-term fixes such as buying data center capacity, research by Oracle has found. Polling 950 senior IT personnel across the globe, Oracle also found that the number of businesses looking to build new data centers within the next two years has risen from 27 percent to 38 percent.

For instance, computer scientist David Gewirtz writes on ZDnet that he is only billed 11 cents a month. 11 cents! And next month, his bill will go down. • Cisco: Cloud Will Soon Handle Most Data Center Workloads • There has been no shortage of predictions that the cloud will eventually lead to the demise, or diminished role, of corporate data centers. However, new industry data suggests that cloud computing will soon make data centers even busier places than ever. • Cisco just released its first Global Cloud Index, and it has a clear message: it doesn’t matter if you’re using applications from your own data center or from somewhere else, they will be delivered from the cloud. Organization’s data centers will be moving to the cloud in a big way.

Is Wyoming Ideal for Data Centers? • Open Space – Large Sites • Population Centers Under 50,000 = OSOM • Land Cost • Large Flat Sites Allow Berms & Buffer Zones • Relatively Cheap Power • Abundant Power From Multiple Sources • WY Generated Power is 86% Exported – Lots of Growth • Many of Renewable Energy Sources

Is Wyoming Ideal for Data Centers? • Climate – Cool/Cold & Dry • Available State Educated Resources • Numerous Long Haul Fiber Routes • Most Major Communications Carriers Pass Through Wyoming Today • Access to Water • Corporate & Personal Income Tax – Lack of! • Low Sales Tax on Building Materials & Computing Related hardware & Software

Are Data Centers Good For Wyoming? • Environmentally Friendly – Little or No Impact on Environment After Construction. • High Paying Non Energy/Petroleum Employment • Helps Keep State Educated People in Wyoming • Reduces the “Brain Drain” of High Tech People • Interconnect With Long Haul Broadband/Fiber Networks Will Improve Local Access • Substantial Economic Benefit to the State and Local Community • Low Visual or Aesthetic Impact Compared to Other Industry Facilities

  7. Is Wyoming Ideal for All Data Centers? There Are Several “Types” of Data Centers But Not All Would Consider Wyoming as the Ideal Location! Not Good For: Corp DC Near Corp HQ Research DC Near or on Research Site Colocation Sites That Must Be Within 100 Milesof Population Centers Good For: Unique Purpose Data Centers Like NCAR, NSA, Network Control Centers Corporate Data Centers Some Colocation/Managed Services Sites Large Back-up or Recovery Sites Mass Data Storage Sites (Google, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon) Public & Private Cloud Site Federal Government Data Centers

  8. Is This New? What’s Changed? There Have Been Substantial Technology, Network, Thought and Political Correctness Changes the Last 5 years • Blade Server Technology with 2 Processors With 8 Cores and up to 8 VMS Per Core (128 Compute Instances) in a 1 & ¾ in Rack Space requiring substantially new and different cooling designs • Social Networks and Mobile Applications requiring unprecedented amounts of data storage and processing • Cloud Computing Centers using the new technologies and network improvements are being built by the dozens • Substantial bandwidth increases & substantially reduced Latency on Fiber Networks – at Lower $$ – it can be anywhere • It Doesn’t Need to be Within Eyesight of Corp HQ Anymore • Threat Avoidance/Survival – Get Away From Larger “Target” Areas – Large Cities • Reduced Power, Ambient Air Cooling, “Green”

Is The I80 Corridor the Only Good Area? • NO! • There Are Many Other Areas Within Wyoming That Would Be Great Locations Depending Upon Several Factors But Power Costs, Alternative Power and Fiber Will Most Likely be the Long Term Drivers • Sorry to Say – Due to the Yellowstone Caldera the Northwestern most area of the North West Quadrant Would Most Likely NOT be a Prime Location

North East Quadrant • Strengths • Population – Open Space • Multiple power plants coupled with Dual 230KVA looped distribution in a portion of the quadrant • Power Cost in some areas • Fiber Along I-25 /I-90 and RT routes in north east • Climate • Lower altitude than some other areas of the State • Natural Gas sources in region • Weaknesses • Water except in municipal areas • Sewer - Waste Treatment • Altitude but less so • Lack of Shovel Ready Sites • No convenient significant airport within 1.5 hours • Lack of fiber Rings between Gillette and Sheridan • Only one shovel ready sites with power, fiber, water & sewer • Power conditions and/or rates in some area

North East Quadrant cont. • Areas with Data Center Potential • Sheridan – one designated commercial area, good fiber – but with no committed power- good population could support 25 to 30 MW of data centers in the area • Buffalo - good power grid and dual fiber routes • Kaycee – good power grid and single fiber route on long haul network • Gillette – very good power, good coverage on the RT fiber network with access to national long haul routes • Osage – Switchyard location on a 230KVA power grid with good local RT fiber ring & access to the national long haul route • Newcastle – access to the 230KVA looped grid and good fiber access

South East Quadrant • Strengths • Population – Open Space • The three largest population cities – staffing needs for multiple large centers • Multiple power plants coupled with several 230KVA and 345KVA looped distribution mostly along I-25 and I-80 • Power Cost in some areas • Fiber Along I-80 and I-25 as well as from I-25 on SR211 to Horse Creek and then west • Proximity to Denver Airport • Weaknesses • Generally the rest of the quadrant • Water & sewer except in municipal areas • Altitude • Only one shovel ready sites with power, fiber, water & sewer • Power conditions and/or rates in some area • Torrington should be a good location but fiber is weak

South East Quadrant cont. • Areas with Data Center Potential • Casper – power plants, great power distribution network, 2 national fiber long haul routes and local fiber routes, good potential sites close in to the city – could be easy link up for water and sewer, Casper airport • Wheatland – is a gem - exceptional power, dual fiber routes and a huge area adjacent to the 1,650MW power plant that would be an ideal industrial or data center park. • Cheyenne – great power & expansion plans, 8 long haul national and 2 regional fiber routes and several POPs, good power rates, targeted development areas, NCAR site • Rt 211 to Horse Creek - good power grid and three fiber routes • Laramie – very good power, 10 long haul national and 2 regional fiber routes, 3 or 4 designated commercial development sites • Rock River, Medicine Bow and Hanna – good power and transmission lines, 4 long haul fiber routes • Rawlins – great power & transmission lines, 10 long haul fiber routes and plenty of developable sites near city utilities

North West Quadrant • Strengths • Population – Open Space • Good power and distribution in Cody - Big Horn, Washakie and Hot Springs Counties along primary roads and Riverton and Landers • Good ringed fiber networks in the same areas as the good power • Power Cost in some areas • Weaknesses • Generally the rest of the quadrant • Water & sewer except in municipal areas • Altitude • Only one industrial site with power, fiber, water & sewer • Power conditions and/or rates in several area

North West Quadrant cont. • Areas with Data Center Potential • Cody – 3 hydro power plants, good power looped 115KVA distribution network, local ringed fiber with access back to Casper and into MT – 2nd local net being built, good potential site by the airport – could be easy link up for water and sewer • Powell , Byron Lovell - good power grid. Local fiber with access to MT and Casper • Greybull, Basin, Worland & Thermopolis – good power looped 115KVA distribution network, local ringed fiber with access back to Casper and into MT – 2nd local net being built and access to water and sewer in close to the cities • Riverton, Hudson & Lander much the same as above. Will be much better when the new fiber route via Dubois over the Togwotee pass is completed next year be on multiple routes.

South West Quadrant Strengths Population – Open Space Multiple huge power plants coupled with several 230KVA and 345KVA looped distribution networks Throughout Sweetwater, Uinta and Lower Lincoln Counties Great power in Star Valley Fiber Along I-80 and through Star Valley Power cost with RMP is good but the lowest in the State is in Star Valley Weaknesses Everything other than the I-80 corridor and Star Valley Water & sewer except in municipal areas Altitude Only one almost shovel ready sites with power, fiber, water & sewer Kemmerer which is extremely well positioned with power, water, sewer and population is screwed on fiber.

South West Quadrant cont. • Areas with Data Center Potential • Evanston – great power & transmission lines just north of I-80 with tie into several wind farms, numerous long haul fiber routes and POPs and 1,000+ acres of County land with fiber, water and sewer on site – needs power looped through. Proximity to SLC airport and SLC & Park City population • Green River, Rock Springs – very good power and numerous long haul fiber routes. Close in to cities access to water and sewer • Alpine, Thayne, Afton – Star Valley – very good looped power grid, Lowest power rates in the State, 2 regional fiber routes one that ties into Syringa Networks to SLC, Idaho, OR and WA as well as access to Jackson’s higher tech educated work force • Carter – is a gem dual 230KVA looped power lines, all fiber routes and POPs within 2 miles and a 240,000 gal water tank. • IF Kemmerer only had fiber.

Miscellaneous • 1kw = 1,000 watts the power for 10 – 100 watt light bulbs • 1MW = 1,000 kw or 1,000,000 watts the power for 10,000 – 100 watt light bulbs • PUE is Power Utilization Efficiency – old data centers were 1.6 to 2.0 at 2.0 a data center used double the energy that the computing systems drew. Today the target is =< 1.2. • 115, 138, 230 and 345kVA is a power line rating. 345kVA line would equal 345,000 volt amps – could of transmitting 1,000MW + of power Data Storage Definitions Power Information

The New York Times 13 February 2012 SAN FRANCISCO -- Technology used to be so simple. In the old days, you listened to music on your iPod while exercising. During an idle moment at the office you might use Google on your Microsoft Windows PC to search for the latest celebrity implosion. Maybe you would post an update on Facebook. After dinner, you could watch a DVD from Netflix or sink into a new page-turner that had arrived that day from Amazon. That vision, where every company and every device had its separate role, is so 2011. The biggest tech companies are no longer content simply to enhance part of your day. … The new strategy is to build a device, sell it to consumers and then sell them the content to play on it. Last week's news that Google is preparing its first Google-branded home entertainment device -- a system for streaming music in the house -- might seem far afield for an Internet search and advertising company, but fits solidly into an industry wide goal in which each tech company would like to be all things to all people all day long. ''It's not about brands or devices or platforms anymore,'' said Michael Gartenberg, an analyst at Gartner. ''It's about the ecosystem. The idea is to get consumers tied into that ecosystem as tightly as possible so they and their content are locked into one system.'' So Facebook, which has half of its users accessing it from mobile devices … Apple, once just a computer maker, already gets most of its profit from mobile devices and is eyeing televisions, which would play content from iTunes. Amazon created the Kindle Fire tablet, and there is intense speculation it is developing a Kindle Phone -- … Microsoft, which has tightened its relationship with Nokia to again be a major player in phone software, has placed its Xbox in millions of living rooms as a home entertainment portal. Reports of the new Google device come just as the search giant's $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility is expected to close, … As an example of how Google will use hardware to push software, Mr. McDevitt, a consultant with CSMG/TMNG, cited Google Wallet, a cellphone payment system released last fall. Google put a lot of work into this software. It had 150,000 retailers deploy near-field communications readers so all a customer would have to do to buy a pack of Juicy Fruit was wave a smartphone. It had Citigroup encourage its MasterCard holders to use Google Wallet as an extension of their credit cards. ''The next new Motorola phone will undoubtedly come preinstalled with the Google Wallet near-field communications chip,'' Mr. McDevitt concluded in a report last fall. ''And where Motorola leads, the other handset manufacturers using Android are likely to follow.''
