The Legend of the Indian PaintbrushAdapted from the book: The Legend of the Indian PaintbrushBy: TomiedePaolaPowerpoint by :Karlen R.2012
Once, there were three Indian brothers. One of them was smaller than the others. His name was Little Gopher. He wanted to wrestle and hunt with the other boys.
One day the chief came to talk with Little Gopher. He said, “Do not struggle. I see something else in you.Your brothers will grow up to be warriors. You will be remembered for a different reason.”
One day Little Gopher went into the hills alone. He had a dream-vision.There were two people in his vision.A grand-father and an Indian Maiden. She was holding a snow white buckskin.
She said, “Find a buckskin as white as this once.Paint the sunset on it.”
As she finished talking the sky cleared. The sky was filled with color from the sunset. The buckskin turned the colors of the sunset.
.The night came.Little Gopher walked back to his villageand told everyone about his dream-vision.
Little Gopher made paint out of berriesand began to paint pictures on the white buckskin.
He painted pictures of great hunts, wonderful deedsand dream-visions.
Still his paintings looked dull and darkand not bright like the sunset.Little Gopher put away the white buckskin.
Many months later he found his pure white buckskin,He did not paint on it because he could not find the bright colors.
One night he heard a voice calling him.The voice said,“Because you have been faithful to you and your village, you shall find the colors you are seeking.
He found the most beautiful colorsand painted the most beautiful painting in all the world.
The tribe always remembered Little Gopherand renamed him ,“He-Who-Brought-the-Sunset-to-the Earth.”
