Physical Features: • River Danube • The Northern And Southern Calcareous Alps • Central Alps are the largest mountains that run straight through Austria • Bohemian Forest • Pannonia Plain • Relative Location: • Austria is north of Italy and Slovenia, south of Germany and Czech Republic, west of Switzerland and, east of Hungary. It is in the North Eastern Hemisphere. It is a landlocked country • Man-made Features: Geography Giant Ferris Wheel Schonbrunn Palace Fortress Hohensalzburg Hallstatt Village Grossglockner Alpine Road • The Giant Ferris Wheel: • A Viennese landmark located in Prater • It was part of an old traditional amusement park • Riding the Ferris Wheel gives you an amazing view of the Viennese City • built in 1897 • Featured in the 1947 film “The Third Man”, gaining it’s international prominence

  3. Archaeology/History 1701-1714 – War between Austria and France. France is defeated. 1500-1600 – Ottaman Empire invade Austria but are defeated 700’s – Austria is ruled by Charlemagne the King of the Franks 1955 – Austria joins the European Union 1918 – The last Habsburg Emperor was overthrown and Austria became a republic • Famous Artifacts • Heidentor (Heathens Gate): Roman monument and landmark of The Archaeological Park Carnuntum. It was built from 354-361 A.D. in honor of Emperor Constantius II. • Gladiator School: In September 2011 British archaeologists discovered an ancient Roman Gladiator school just outside of Vienna. It covers 3,350 square yards of land. • Carnuntum: originated as a Roman military camp and was founded in 6 A.D. It is now an archaeological park on the Danube just east of Vienna. The open air amphitheater is the only remaining building of the army camp.

Political Science/Sociology • Government: • Austria is a federal government and a democracy. • It consists of a Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, and a President. • They believe in basic human rights, inviolability of property, individual freedom, the right to fair trial, privacy in their homes, the privacy of correspondence, freedom of expression, freedom of the press, freedom of faith and conscience and the freedom of science and it’s teachings. • Social Programs: • Medical: They have a two-tier medical system in which many people receive publicly funded care, but also have the option of private health insurance. • Federal Police: The Austrian Federal police formed in July 2005 as one whole unit of law enforcement. • Education: Free public school system and nine years of education are mandatory

  5. Economics Natural Resources: oil, coal, lignite, timber, iron ore, copper, zinc, antimony, magnetite, tungsten, graphite, salt, hydro power. Trade Partners: Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Netherlands Money and Taxation: Austria’s currency is the Euro. Income tax ranges from 21% to 50% depending on your wealth. Married people are taxed separately and payroll withholding tax is in effect.
