  1. Make sure there is a level of assurance before you wire the first deposit payment to your supplier in China manufacturing. Resources on sourcing Chinareveal some measures that may be taken to gain 'that assurance' and to avoid miscommunications between the supplier and the importer: Things to Consider before Paying the Deposit to a Chinese Manufacturer

  2. Get your hands on a sample. • The first golden rule of paying deposits to Chinese manufacturers is, Do not make a payment until you have received a sample. • The biggest contributor to imperfect decisions is the scarcity of time.

  3. The importer has his clients lined up, so he pressurizes the manufacturer to get down to business fast; while the manufacturer insists on the deposit to help him do so. • Hence it would always be a good idea to clear the air before the deposit is made for what's taken for granted.

  4. Have all the papers in order. Before you pay the deposit, you need to acquire a few documents from the supplier. • An RFQ (Request For Quote) • An invoice • A purchase order

  5. An RFQ from the supplier with all specifications clearly listed. • • An invoice from your supplier. This in many ways will mirror the RFQ but it should have the supplier’s chop and signature (required for proper Chinese business). This document should be on official supplier letterhead.
