  1. SCIENCE FAIRMini-Lesson #2Forming A Background Research Plan

  2. NOW….. Using the blue folder, read “Background Research Plan”, “Finding Information for Your Research Paper”. And “Bibliography.” Copy and answer the 4 questions below. Title this Science Fair Background Research in your composition book. You will have 20-25 minutes. • What is a background research plan and what are three things it should include? • Why should you throw out irrelevant information/questions? • In researching the answers to questions, how do you know if it is a good reference? • What information should you collect from websites for your bibliography?

  3. What is the Background Research Plan? Essentially, it is a plan that will help you research your scientific question in order to write a formal research paper. The research paper is written BEFORE experimentation to help you formulate a hypothesis which will predict what you believe SHOULD happen during the experiment.

  4. What steps should I take to complete the Background Research Plan? • Write out your science fair question as specific as possible, knowing what you will be changing and what you will be measuring 2. Create a list of 3-6 key words relevant to your science fair topic 3. Using your key words, create a list of 10 questions that will help you find information about your topic

  5. 4. Eliminate any questions that are irrelevant or will not really prove helpful in creating a hypothesis about your experiment. 5. RESEARCH and ANSWER your questions using the internet or text sources. Make sure your informational sources are “good references.” 6. Keep a Bibliography log of sources you used to answer your questions.

  6. TODAY YOU WILL WORK ON YOUR BACKGROUND RESEARCH PLAN….. • DO ask me if you need help writing a clear and detailed scientific question • DO start creating and answering questions using your textbook or laptop • DON’T forget to write down bibliography information when you find answers • DON’T use references like Wikipedia (anyone can alter it!!) Stick to reliable “good” references Your background research plan (form) is due: A = Wednesday October 25, 2017 B = Thursday October 26, 2017
