  1. THERMODYNAMICS AND METABOLISM

  2. We are simply a collection of cells, each committed to the daily task of keeping us alive. The various biochemical reactions that occur in each and every one of our cells constitutes our metabolism. METABOLISM: THE SUM OF THE BIOCHEMICAL REACTIONS IN A LIVING SYSTEM Recall:

  3. Energy cannot be created nor destroyed, but it can be transformed from one type into another and transferred from one object to another. FIRST LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS

  4. During any process, the universe tends towards disorder. SECOND LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS

  5. Reactant • White crystals • Products • Smelly gas • Turned liquid • Got really cold. The smelly chiller

  6. Reactants • Marshmallow is white and soft • Products • Flames • Heat is released • Black crispy S'mores

  7. Our bodies have both exothermic and endothermic reactions happening. • What is the risk of having alot of heat released from an exothermic biochemical reaction? • Increase in temperature will denature proteins in the cell So if an endothermic reaction is happening nearby and at the same time, then the heat from one reaction can be used to drive the reaction that requires heat. REACTION COUPLING

  8. What kind of molecule might be around to facilitate this kind of specific activity. • Yes? • Enzymes!!!! Who can help?

  9. Substrate level phosphorylation • Phosphate group transferred from one molecule to another • Dephosphorylation is exothermic and a phosphorylation is endothermic Types of Coupled reactions

  10. REDOX reactions: LEO the lion says GER • Loss of electrons is oxidation and gain of electrons is reduction • Oxidation is exothermic and a reduction is endothermic • Electrons are carried by electron carriers. • NAD+ to NADH + H+ • (nicotinamide adenine • dinucleotide) • FAD to FADH2 • (flavinadenine • dinucleotide)
