  1. San Juan RiverFlow Recommendations Current Flow Recommendations An Historical Perspective By Dr. Vincent Lamarra

  2. San Juan River Flow RecommendationHistorical Perspective Summary from 30,000 feet Intent was to provide a Magnitude of flow (IE Days greater than 10,000 cfs), a Duration (IE 5 days between March 1 and July 31) and a Frequency of occurrence ( 20% of years , no longer than 10 consecutive years) Mimic a natural hydrograph (Timing) Based upon habitat and observed geomorphic changes during the research period ALSO based on observations of fish community changes

  3. San Juan River Flow RecommendationPost Analysis Challenges Nature did not provide a full spectrum of available water Flow Recommendation criteria are interrelated There are a lot of zeros in the higher flow categories Monitoring was focused on Recovery and not on the evaluation of the flow recommendations (It could be argued that they are one and the same) Specific parameters that justified the flow recommendations have not been monitored consistently

  4. San Juan Historical Hydrology (Available Water)

  5. Pearson's Correlation Matrix

  6. Inter-parameter Correlations

  7. San Juan Historical Hydrology (Too Many Zeros )

  8. Habitat and Hydrologic Data Sets

  9. Geomorphic Data Distribution • 670 Total Channels have been Defined in 26 Mapping Events • Secondary Channel Splits 228 (34%) • Main Channel Splits 69 (10%) • Island Splits 204 (31%) • Cobble/Sand Bar Splits 169 (25%) • Mapping Events Had Flows Ranging from 479 to 9,453 cfs • Mapping From December 1992 to September 2014

  10. Data Integration Antecedent Parameters Habitat Parameters

  29. San Juan RiverFlow Recommendations Parameter: Flood Control Release

  30. Conclusions Current Flow Recommendations (CFR) were developed through integration of available data both biological and physical Data collected since implementation of the CFR should be evaluated as an integrated package Acknowledge that some parameters cannot be evaluated without repeating some research studies or repeat modeling under current river conditions Concept of the mimicry of a natural hydrograph should be expanded to include temperature
