  1. Independence High School Home of the Knights Class of 2019 Registration for Senior Classes

  2. Juniors, registration for your senior year classes will be beginning soon! The IHS counselors will be meeting with you Feb. 2nd-Feb. 7th through your English 3 class. Here is some information for you in order to prepare! 

  3. During your individual meeting with your counselor, we will review with you: • The courses you would like to take next year • Review your credits and make sure you are on-track for graduation senior year • Explain Dual Credit options for next year at Collin College • College Admissions • SAT & ACT Testing • NCAA requirements for student athletes

  4. Academic & Course CatalogThe Academic & Course Catalogs are online! You can find the complete 2018-19 Academic Guide and Course Catalog online on the Frisco ISD website at:

  5. How Many Credits are Required to Graduate? A student needs 26 credits in order to graduate. A half-credit is earned each semester for each class passed with a 70 or above average. Next year, as a senior, you must take a minimum of 6 classes (most seniors still decide to take more than 6).

  6. Juniors PLEASE REVIEW: Your Graduation Plan Requirements: • 4 credits each year of all core classes: English, Math, Science, Social Studies • 2 credits of Foreign Language: Spanish, French, Chinese • 1 credit of PE • 1 credit of Fine Art • 1 credit of Technology • .5 credit of Health • .5 credit of Speech • 4 credits of elective classes Total credits needed for graduation: 26 Log into HAC…check transcript for graduation requirements!

  7. State Assessments for Graduation • 5 STAAR End-of-Course (EOC) Exams • English I • English II • Algebra I • Biology • US History

  8. Promotion to 12th Grade • To become a senior, you must have earned at least 18 total credits before the beginning of next year and be on track to graduate!

  9. GPA and Rank • Your GPA and Class Rank will be recalculated 4 more times: • June 2018 • September 2018 • January 2019 • June 2019 • Final GPA/Rankings for top ten purposes happens at 5th Six Weeks senior year

  10. Top 10% Rule • Class Rank and GPA are used to determine if you are in the “Top 10%” of your class. • Students who are in the top 10% of their class (at the end of junior year) are automatically accepted into Texas public colleges. (UT Austin is top 7% for those entering college Fall 2018).

  11. Programs Needing Applications or Teacher Approval at IHS: Teacher Approval or Audition: Band Orchestra Choir Athletics Applications in Counseling Office: AP Music Theory Athletic Trainer Yearbook 2 & 3 Partner’s PE Teen Leadership 2 TV Broadcast 2 & 3- see Ms. Bagwell

Programs Needing Applications or Teacher Approval at IHS: • ISM- Independent Study and Research Applications available in counseling office • Executive Student Council- Applications available Feb. 16th in the AP office or from Ms. Malloy • Student Ambassadors- Application Process later this spring!

  13. Are you planning on taking one of these upper-level CTE classes next year? You MUST complete the CTE Center Work-Based Learning Program Application, which can be found online on the CTE Center’s website! The deadline for completed applications is Friday, February 16th. ** Incomplete and late applications will not be accepted. Courses listed below require a WBL Program Qualification Form • Architectural Design II • Child Guidance • Practicum in Child Guidance • Culinary Arts • Advanced Culinary Arts • Education and Training • Practicum in Education &Training • Electrocardiogram (EKG) • Emergency Medical Tech (EMT) • Health Science Clinical • Pharmacology • Practicum in Government • Practicum in Graphic Design & Illustration • Practicum in Marketing • Practicum in Veterinary Medical Applications • Sports Management

  14. Late Arrival/Early Release • Must be off campus during scheduled time for late arrival or early release; Must have transportation! Aide Positions • No rank points or credit earned • Do not sign up for teacher/office aide now….request those positions in August at schedule pick-up or during the first two weeks of school!

  15. Considering Dual Credit? • A Dual Credit course awards college and high school credit • Taught at Collin College by Collin professors • Requires that you meet Collin College’s admissions criteria and complete the admission process with the college

  16. Dual Credit vs. AP Course • AP • Free (only exam costs $$) • Taught by HS staff • Does not impact college GPA • Possible college credit • More in HS GPA weight • Preferred by highly selective colleges • Dual Credit • Costs money • Taught by college staff • Impacts college GPA • College credit if pass • Worth slightly less HS GPA weight

  17. Considering Dual Credit? • Do you have… • A/B average this year? • Transportation? • Money for tuition and books? (Roughly $100 per semester course, plus book) • Good attendance? • English and math skills to pass the required placement exam? • Must pick up dual credit packet from counselor once we receive them • Requires that you attend Dual Credit Night at on Wednesday, Feb. 7th, at 6:00 p.m. in the IHS cafe.

  18. Check your potential college’s AP credit policy • Start researching your colleges and universities that offer credit or placement for AP scores. You should research this in advance so there are no surprises! https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/creditandplacement/search-credit-policies

  19. Making a Schedule Change next year • Your last opportunity to change an elective for next year is on or before: • April 13th, 2018 • Only approved program changes (in or out of athletics, band, etc.) can be made the first two weeks of school or of the new semester. • PAP/AP students must complete the first six-weeks grade cycle before a change to on-level will be considered.

  20. Dates to Remember • Feb. 2nd-7th – Counselors will meet individually with all juniors through English classes. • February 14th- all course verification forms due back to the IHS counseling office ***If you do not turn in your course verification sheet, we will choose classes for you. ***Complete the alternate classes or we choose those for you! Alternates that end up on your schedule next year cannot be changed!
