  1. The Evolution of Abayas through the Ages

  2. Pre Oil-Period Abaya Style • Before the Saudis Oil period, Bedouin Abaya was worn by women. It was a square shaped made from wool fabric. It could only be afforded by higher society women such as Sheikhs or Merchants.

  3. Abayas during 1970’s • During 1970, black silk abayas was popular which in time became less opaque. It became so popular that it was worn at social functions. The style of clothing was such that it was draped from back of the head, bunched at waist and tucked under arm.

  4. Abaya Dresses during 1980’s • During 1980’s, shoulder abaya was introduced which was basic full length black sleeve abayas with narrow black shayla that covered the head.

  5. Abayas during 1990’s • The basic black abaya continued from 1980’s but little style was added like laces, heavy embroidery, iron-on rhinestones were added.

  6. Abayas during 2000-2010 • During 2000-2010, new cuts and styles were experimented like butterflies, bats or anything with wings. Some used narrow or wide belts according to their waist to blend with western wear.

  7. Abayas during 2010 – Present Day • From 2010 till present, Abayas are made in different colors. Fashion designers are trying abaya dresses in new colors with amazing designs.
