  2. ACCOUNTING DEGREES & CAREERS Although not required, most accountants attend college and earn a bachelor’s degree. However, a bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field is considered the minimum education requirement for those who plan to become a CPA. Some states even require advanced coursework beyond the normal bachelor’s degree in subjects such as financial reporting, taxes, auditing and other non- accounting business areas. A total of 150 credit hours in accounting and related areas are commonly needed.

  3. ADVERTISING DEGREES & CAREERS While it is not required, a successful career in advertising usually begins with a comprehensive undergraduate education. A bachelor’s degree in advertising, communications, marketing or a related field can provide a foundation in the creative, management, interpersonal and analytical skills required to work in the field. Coursework in business, consumer behavior and media combined with classes in design, copywriting and photography prepares students to develop effective ad campaigns while employed at agencies around the country.

  4. BANKING DEGREES & CAREERS Although degrees in investments and banking may be difficult to find, many programs have specializations in these areas as part of other programs. Finance, accounting and business are the most likely choices, but investment firms and banks may also be pleased to see degrees in economics, mathematics or engineering. Regardless of the program name, what hiring panels really want to see is that you’re good with numbers, and each of these degrees demand that of their graduates. While in school, students should begin honing the skills they’ll need to be successful investment bankers.

  5. CONSULTANT CAREERS & DEGREES Management consultants in the United States made a median wage of $81,320 per year in 2015, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That number might be higher or lower depending upon several factors, including experience, educational attainment and geographical location. Here’s what to expect from consultant salaries in various states. As more organizations seek to save money by becoming more efficient, consultants are expected to be more in demand. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates an increase of 14 percent in employment for management consultants from 2014 to 2024.

  6. MARKETING DEGREES & CAREERS Most marketing careers require a bachelor’s degree and some require or recommend a graduate degree. No matter which degree is eventually obtained, it all starts with getting a high school diploma. While most high school courses don’t relate directly to marketing, doing well in classes such as English and math is important. Additionally, if there are any clubs or organizations in your school that promote business or communications, you should dip your toe into the marketing pool by becoming involved in them. Student leadership can also teach high school students about marketing and promotions.

SALES DEGREES & CAREERS Individuals who prefer to be on the road most of the time instead of working in a cubicle all day may find a career in sales to be more attractive than other jobs in the fields of advertising, marketing, and business. Sales professionals spend most of their time visiting clients in person, communicating with clients and negotiating contracts over the phone and email. In some cases, they may be required to attend meetings with marketing and advertising teams to ensure their activities are aligned with company goals and objectives.

  8. REAL ESTATE SCHOOLS & CAREERS All real estate professionals must pass a state licensing exam in order to earn money through their own business or through their employer. Certification is often required and the National Association of Realtors offers several certification programs to support a real estate professional’s career path. As the real estate market continues to grow, demand for real estate professionals remains strong. Real estate brokers, sales agents, and consultants help their clients buy and sell properties for the best possible price. They are directly involved with negotiating contracts, seeking out selling opportunities, and closing deals.

  9. INSURANCE DEGREES & CAREERS Workers can enter the insurance industry with anything from a high school diploma to a graduate degree. According to an O*NET survey, 35 percent of claims adjusters who responded had a bachelor’s degree compared to 81 percent of underwriters. Yet unlike with some fields, in which higher educational barriers to entry equate to greater demand and job growth potential, this is not necessarily true in the world of insurance. Underwriter jobs, for instance, are shrinking due to computer automation.
