  2. 1908 • Took place in London, England • 27th April to 31st October • Officially known as the Games of the IV Olympiad • 22 nations • Originally scheduled to be held in Rome • No African or Asian nations were invited

  3. Opening ceremony • 27th April • White City Stadium • King Edward VII declared the games open • For the first time, teams paraded behind their national flags.

  4. White City Stadium • Was built in White City for the 1908 Summer Olympics. • It was opened by King Edward VII on 27th April 1908. • 68 000 seats • There was a dog track, a running track, a cycling track and a swimming tank on one side of the stadium. • The stadium was demolished in 1985 for BBC White City.

  5. Interesting facts • Since Finland was part of the Russian Empire, the Finnish team were expected to march under the Russian rather than Finnish flag, so many chose to march without a flag at all. • Archers William and Charlotte Dod became the first brother and sister medalists. • Oscar Swahn, aged 60, was the oldest ever competitor to earn an Olympic gold medal, winning the running deer shooting, single shot. • After 42 kilometres of running, the first man to enter the stadium was Dorando Pietri of Italy, but he collapsed on the track five times and was disqualified when officials carried him across the finish line.

  7. Opening ceremony • 29th July • Wembley Stadium • King George VI declared the games open at 4pm • 2500 pigeons were set free • 21-gun salute • The Olympic torch was carried by athlete John Mark

Wembley Stadium • The original stadium was built by Sir Robert McAlpine for the British Empire Exhibition of 1923. • Distinctive Twin Towers became its trademark. • 82 000 seats • Was the main athletics venue for the 1948 Summer Olympics. • Was closed in October 2000 and was demolished in 2003 for redevelopment. • The new Wembley Stadium was opened in 2007 at the same location.

Interesting facts • Germany and Japan were not invited due to the recent memory of World War II. • In the marathon, Belgian Etienne Gaily entered the stadium first, but was so physically drained that he could barely walk around the track. Two men passed him before he finished. • Indiaand Pakistanfirst participated as independent nations. • Olympic basketball returned to being an indoor competition after the disastrous weather conditions at the final game in the 1936 Summer Olympics.
