Emergency Preparedness • Know your school districts policies • Emergencies may include –natural disasters, pandemic illness, injuries, weather-related issues, violent events, fires/explosions • School nurses assess, plan, implement & evaluate • Address potential issues for students with chronic health conditions, including asthma, diabetes, allergies/anaphylaxis, seizures, or daily medications

  3. 25% of childhood injuries occur while in school (AAP 2008) • 25% of children seeking treatment at a hospital emergency room have either special healthcare needs or chronic illness (AAP 2008) • Seek professional development to address skills related to emergencies, with emphasis on planning, performing triage, providing ER care & promoting a positive recovery phase

  4. Four Phases of Emergency Management • Prevention/Mitigation – establish/conduct school safety programs, participate in school committees, implement vaccination programs • Preparedness – assist in establishing standard ER response plans, participate in skills, drills, & exercises to evaluate school response & effectiveness of the plan

  5. Response – know your role, including triage, coordination of first aid response team, providing direct care, providing mental health support to students & staff • Recovery – after disaster serve as a liaison between community resources & those in need

  6. Emergency Equipment/Resources • Accessible keys to locked supplies & list of phone resources & current CPR certified staff • Emergency cards on students & staff • School-wide emergency response plan/operations • First aid supplies • Disposable blankets, non-latex gloves • One-way resuscitation mask • Cell phone or two way radio

  7. Working refrigerator or cooler • Re-sealable plastic bags • AED • Sharps container • Soap & water, hand sanitizer/disinfectant wipes • Source of oral glucose • Water source, normal saline

  8. Glucose monitoring device & strips • Medications –including emergency • Nebulizer • Oxygen • Pen light, flash lights • Adult & pediatric stethoscope & B/P cuffs • Suction equipment – machine, bulb suction or other device
