  1. Guide to Online Printing

  2. Technology has changed the way organizations work these days. Everything that a team needs to work with is available at the touch of a button. We have become so reliant on them that we find it more convenient to make notes on our phones than using pen and paper. Traditional means are losing their luster and we as a generation are turning our backs on them. However, it would not be totally wise for businesses, especially small and independent firms, to chuck traditional forms of marketing and communications and go digital completely. Printed documents and media still have a lot of power in the marketing world. Going completely digital would mean losing out on several customers. Promotional emails get lost in the inbox; a pamphlet that is handed is noticed. But sending a project to print can be quite a task, even for seasoned designers. There are so many things that could go wrong and so many details to take care of. If you are making use of an online printing company, you need to be vigilant of what you are sending across despite them offering you the best online printing service. This article is an attempt to guide you to take your project from the computer to the printer. Colors: Always make sure that the color palate you work with is CMYK and not RGB. CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. Unlike computers that use RGB (Red, Green and Blue) color scheme, printers use a four color process and these four colors represent the high quality image print. When you design, ensure that you use a CMYK color space and not RGB. While most colors in the printing industry are prepared by blending of CMYK colors, sometimes you might need very specific colors. These colors are not made by the CMYK color blending but need to be ordered for the project. These colors are known as spot colors. The printer needs to have another spot for the spot color, which makes it expensive. There are other color options available such as halftones, duotones, tritones etc., based on the number of tones or colors you chose to have in your printer.

  3. Paper: The color of the paper apart from the colors on ink used plays a very important role, as it allows a designer to get creative and produce great effects that look appealing to the eye. Most designers chose to work with white paper, but there are varieties of white as well. It is often recommended to use a slightly tinted white to print so that the white in the image will stand out against the background. The next thing to consider would be the type of paper you want to work with. There are several options to choose from and each produces a different finish and finished look of the print. The two main types of paper generally available are coated and uncoated. Coated paper takes longer to dry but it makes the print job look more professional and accurate. These are used for making cards, brochures etc. Uncoated papers on the other hand are quicker to dry and are cheaper making them a good choice for huge orders. Newspapers, for instance and printed on uncoated papers. The opacity and thickness of the paper are other aspects that need to be considered. Depending on what the order is, these can be adjusted. Brightness of the sheet of paper is vital, especially in photographs. Bright papers however make reading out of them difficult so they may not be a good choice to print information on. Paper Size is the key element to consider for your project. Though most paper sizes are standardized, you should always consider the paper size that would lead to minimum wastage. It is often a practice to design multiple designs on the same sheet and cutting them down, reducing paper waste and the number of required prints. Design: - Leave enough space for ink to bleed. Bleeds give room for errors while cutting making sure that there is no inconvenience while cutting. - Varnish is a colorless ink that is used as an added layer of protection to the final print. It makes the print brighter especially if applied on coated paper since uncoated paper absorbs the varnish. - After the printing is done, the cutting, folding and binding are additional features that your printer might offer. Depending on the nature of your project, you may choose what is best for you.

  4. Printing Methods: Offset Printing is a printing technique that makes use of a rubber blanket to print. It stamps the ink on the paper and produces high quality images with fewer deformities. Direct-to-plate Printing is a method similar to offset printing, but instead of a rubber blanket, metal plates are used. This method increases the margin for error and inaccuracy. Digital Printing is the fancy younger brother of photocopying. It uses a similar principle except it uses color to print out images. There are no plates or blankets involved where the image is directly sent to the printer. Before deciding on which method or paper to use, make sure to ask your printer about the options they carry and the minimum quantity of prints. Sometimes cheaper jobs produce better results than expensive ones. However, you always have the option of choosing expert online printing services who would guide you through the whole process.
