  2. Objective: • List national land claims in North America in the mid-1700s.

  3. Review 1. Define social mobility— 2. What was the name of the religious movement that swept through the colonies in the 1730s and 1740s? 3. Who were two leading preachers of the Great Awakening? 4. Define Enlightenment— 5. According to John Locke, what are our three natural rights? 6. Who was an important figure in the development of American science? 7. List three of Franklin’s inventions. 8. Who was the former slave who became a well-respected poet during the Colonial Era? 9. What was the name of Benjamin Franklin’s colonial best-seller?

  4. A. North American Competitors (p. 183) • By the early 1700s, France and Great Britain were competing to be the richest and most powerful nation in Europe. • The contest for power led to four wars in Europe and North America. • The outcome of the fourth war, called the French and Indian War (1754-1763), would change the map of North America.

  5. B. European Land Claims (pp. 183-184) • England and France were not the only nations with claims in North America. • Spain claimed Florida, the Caribbean Islands, and land in the Southwest. • Both England and France claimed land extending westward from the thirteen colonies.

  6. C. Trouble in the Ohio Valley (p. 184) • The center of the land quarrel was the Ohio Valley, located west of the Appalachian Mountains and south of the Great Lakes. • Although both England and France claimed the Ohio Valley, French fur trappers gave France an earlier claim. • Tensions grew when pioneer families from the English colonies moved west.

  7. D. Native Americans Take Sides (p. 185) • Control of the Ohio Valley depended on the Native Americans who lived there. • Although the British could offer Native Americans more and better goods, the French could offer them something more important—respect. • The six nations of the Iroquois League sided with the British, but other Native Americans in the Ohio Valley were willing to fight for France.

  8. E. First Steps Toward War (p. 185) • The Virginia governor accused the French of trespassing and sent 21-year-old George Washington, a young major in the Virginia militia, with a message ordering them to leave. • The French commander treated Washington politely, but he refused to leave. • When he returned to Virginia, Washington was promoted and sent out once again.

  9. F. The First Battles (p. 185) • Washington led 150 Virginia soldiers to build a fort where the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers meet to form the Ohio River. • But the French were already building Fort Duquesne (doo-CAIN) on that site. • French forces soon surrounded the hastily-built Fort Necessity, and Washington and his men were forced to surrender.

  10. Review: 10. Which European nations fought each other in the French and Indian War? 11. What region was at the center of the land quarrel between France and Britain? 12. Which Native Americans sided with the British? 13. Which 21-year-old major in the Virginia militia did the British send to force the French out of the Ohio Valley?
