O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done, The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won, The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting, While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring; But O heart! heart! heart! O the bleeding drops of red, Where on the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead.

O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells; Rise up- for you the flag is flung- for you the bugle trills; For you bouquets and ribbon'd wreaths- for you the shores a-crowding, For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning; Here Captain! dear father! This arm beneath your head! It is some dream that on the deck, You've fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still, My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will, The ship is anchor'd safe and sound, its voyage closed and done, From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won; Exult O shores, and ring O bells! But I with mournful tread, Walk the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead.

6. TPCASTT T – it is about a ships captain P – O Captain! The war is over. We have fought hard and won for our cause. The end of this conflict is almost near . Everyone is excited. But many have died during this war. Fallen cold and dead. O Captain! Rise up and look at the good. You have won so your flag is waving . The people are calling for you. Calling you captain and father. It must be a dream that you have fallen cold and dead. After all of the calling, the captain does not answer. He is still laying there dead. Everyone is safe now, and the conflict is almost over. We are happy that it is over, but are mournful of your death.

TPCASTT A – exalting of Abraham Lincoln, and mournful of his death, but also excited that the war is over S – In every stanza after the fourth line. • The first four lines exalt Abraham Lincoln and the country that has overcome the civil war • The last four lines mourn Lincoln’s death T – “O Captain! My Captain!” • The leader of the country is being praised T – Everybody goes through the cycle of life and death, where they are admired because of their accomplishments in life, and mourned for after they die.

10. Tenets in O Captain! My Captain! • “Rise up-for you the flag is flung-for you the bugle trills” • Idealism • Society is honoring the brave men that fought for our country to do what is right • In idealism humans are naturally good at their core

11. Tenets in O Captain! My Captain! • “the ship has weathered every rack; the prize we sought is won” • Intuition • Standing up for what you believe in • They stood up for what they believed in and won

12. Connection • Intuition – during the civil war people fought for what they believed in and won. Today there are many issues that still must be fought for, but people are less inclined to go to war for just one issue. • Idealism – Abraham Lincoln was perceived as naturally good by the people, just like we perceive our leaders as naturally good.
