  2. Section I: Conquest in the Americas 1. Spanish soldiers reached the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan in 1519, and within a few years had captured and destroyed the Aztec empire and built a new city. 2. In the West Indies the Tainos were friendly and generous toward the Spanish and gave them food and goods to survive.

  3. Conquest in the Americas (continued) 3. Spanish conquistadors, or conquerors, settled on the islands of Hispaniola, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. 4. Seized the gold ornaments, enslaved the Natives to make them pan for more gold, and to convert to Christianity.

  19. Reasons for Victory Why did the mighty Aztecs and Incas fall so rapidly? 1.) Superior military technology - Spanish horses, muskets and cannons, metal helmets and armor scared the Native Americans. 2.) Division and discontent among the Indians.
