  1. ECE 2317Applied Electricity and Magnetism Spring 2014 Prof. David R. Jackson Dept. of ECE Notes 1 Notes prepared by the EM Group University of Houston

  2. Important Things • Please read the syllabus carefully! You are responsible for everything on it! • Please read the UH Academic Honesty Policy in the online version of the Student handbook (the website is in the syllabus). • Fill out the Academic Honesty and Syllabus form, sign it, and return it by the deadline indicated (Jan. 29, 2014) or else you may be dropped. • (Optional but recommended) Please fill out and return the grade-posting form.

  3. Class Website Please check the “Important Announcements” section of the class website often. You are responsible for everything that is there.

  4. Note on Attendance • Class attendance is required: • Class attendance may be taken randomly • Pop quizzes may be given. • These are more likely to happen if attendance starts to drop. If you have three unexcused absences, you may be dropped at any time (even at the end of the semester) or fail the course. To have an absence excused, you must get permission from the instructor before class begins.

  5. Prerequisite Letter If you get a letter, the ECE department thinks you are missing one or more course requirements. Prerequisites: ECE 1331 (Computers and Problem Solving) Math 2433: (Calculus III) Physics 1322 (University Physics II) Chemistry 1372 (Chemistry for Engineers) Chemistry 1117 (Chemistry Lab) Credit for or Registration in (CFORI): Math 3321 (Engineering Math)

  6. Prerequisite Letter (cont.) If you get a letter you must respond to it and return it to the Department front office (N308-D) by the deadline indicated on the form or you will be dropped. Any questions about the form…please see Prof. Markenscoffin room N320-D.

  7. What is this Course About? Introduction to Electromagnetism (electric and magnetic fields) • In this course we mainly study STATICS (zero, or low frequency) • In the next EM course, ECE 3317, you study dynamics.

  8. Class Notes The class notes will be placed on the class website (both pptxand pdf versions). If you have trouble reading the equations in the pptxversion, you are most likely having a font problem due to missing MathType fonts. • Use the pdf version • Download the free MathTypefonts:(http://www.dessci.com/en/dl/fonts/default.asp) • Download MathType(30 day free trial). After 30 days, it reverts to MathTypeLite, which has all of the fonts and is still better than Equation Editor (which comes with Microsoft Office).

  9. ECE 2317 Workshop The ECE 2317 workshop is a great way to get some extra help, in a collaborative and friendly learning environment. • The workshop is run by Krishna Kota (Ph.D. Student in the ECE department). Email: krishnatkota@gmail.com. • She is assisted by Jorge Revuelta(undergraduate student in the ECE department).] • The workshop meets M, W, from 4:00-5:30 p.m., in room E319-D3.

  10. ECE 2317 Workshop (cont.) Enrolling in the workshop: • Enrollment in the workshop is limited to 30 students. There are 16 enrolled as of Monday evening (Jan. 13). • Students must register for the workshop. The workshop is a 1 credit hour pass/fail course. • You must contact Mr. Matthews (jmatthewsjr@uh.edu) before registering. Once registration is complete, it will show up on your PeopleSoft account. • The last day to enroll is the same as the last day to add a class (12th class day, Jan. 29).
