  1. Getting Ready for the Writing Assessment Test Teacher Tips

  2. Before the test: • Examine the student examples. • Write for 35 minutes as many times as possible in the month preceding the test. • Get familiar with the state’s rubric. • Practice with prompts.

  3. Before the test: • Practice editing. • Let students choose to practice legible cursive or print handwriting. • Stress to students that writing off the topic is an automatic 0. • Remind students not to spend too much time on the graphic organizer.

  4. On the day before the test: • Ask students to spend any time they have remaining rereading and editing. • Each student needs to bring 1-2 number 2 pencils with erasers. • The teacher should have extra pencils as well.

  5. On the day before the test: • Purchase a snack prior to testing. • Distribute and complete the student information sheet. • Prepare a “pep talk.”

  6. “Pep Talk” • These compositions will not be graded by the teacher but will be scored by evaluators on a range from 0-6. • The teacher can only read the script so do not ask for additional help. • There will be space on the back of the prompt for the Four Square graphic organizer.

  7. “Pep Talk” • Remember to make your 4 Square. • Spell words the best you can. • Reread the composition and the prompt when finished to be sure you stayed on the topic. • You will have 35 minutes. Every 10 minutes I will record the time left on the chalkboard. • After 10 minutes you should be finished with the Four Square graphic organizer.

  8. On the testing date: • Stand and stretch before beginning. • Provide bathroom break time before beginning. • Have extra pencils ready. • Provide snack before beginning. • Remind students to read, reread, and reread their composition again if they finish early. • If an emergency arises remove the distraction from the room.

  9. On the testing date: • Put a “Testing Do Not Disturb” sign on the door and have a note about the testing put on the morning announcements.

  10. For the Teacher: • The test materials will be given to you in a sealed envelope the morning of the test. • All students should be tested at the same time. • The test materials contain the script for the teacher to follow.
