  2. Tracking Rare Incidence Syndromes (TRIS) project The Tracking Rare Incidence Syndromes (TRIS) project seeks to increase the knowledge base on rare incidence trisomy conditions, and to make this information available to families and interested educational, medical and therapeutic professionals. Children and adults diagnosed with t18, t13, t9 and other rare syndromes possess unique medical, health and developmental needs which require providing information and support to those involved in their daily, educational and medical care. (http://web.coehs.siu.edu/Grants/TRIS/)

  7. Family systems theory • Turnbull and Turnbull developed the family systems theory relatedto families with a member with a disability • Families change over time • Families make adjustments at predictable times (e.g., transitions) • Focus is on family support • Family is viewed as an integrated and interdependent system

  8. Family systems theory continued • Family life cycle is discussed within the family systems theory and includes planned and “off-time” transitions • Planned transitions include first day of kindergarten • “Off-time” transitions include fitting for first wheelchair and new diagnosis (e.g., seizure disorder)

  9. Assistance for transitions: Person-centered planning • Meaningful Access Participation & Support (MAPS) (http://www.inclusive-solutions.com/map.asp) andPlanning Alternative Futures with Hope (PATH) (http://www.inclusive-solutions.com/path.asp) • Both MAPS and PATH create a shared vision for an individual’s future education, participation in the community etc.; no assumptions made based on functioning level; input from parents and family members, professionals and other involved individuals such as a respite worker or family pastor
