  4. The College ApplicationProcess: A Five Step Approach • Step 1: Research your options • Step 2: Complete your application • Step 3: Register for tests and request your scores • Step 4: Complete a transcript request form • Step 5: Ask for letters of recommendation

  5. Step 1: Research Your Options • Explore Naviance • College Reps • College Search • Scholarship Search • Participate in campus visits. Try to visit when school is in session. • Seniors are allowed 2 college visit days • See Mrs. Krusemark for a pre-arranged absence form • Other resources • Visit the ESHS Counseling Center • Attend college fairs • Visit with former students/alumni

  6. Step 1: Research Your Options • Learn about each school’s requirements • Core Course Requirements • Four years of Math? • Foreign Language? • Etc. • Performance Requirements • Grade Point Average • Test Scores • Class Rank

  7. Step 1: Research Your Options • Admissions officers consider your academic and personal qualifications

  8. Step 2: Complete Your Application • Follow deadlines carefully • Help proofread your student’s on-line applications • Follow the college’s application checklist • Create a back-up plan

  9. Step 3: Register for Tests and Request Your Scores ACT Registration Deadlines • September 21st for the October 27th test • November 2nd for the December 8thtest • Note new security enhancements. These include: • Uploading a photo when registering, which will be matched to student on test day • Student must bring photo ID and admission ticket to test center. Students cannot test without both. • Major changes to standby testing (make sure you register by the deadline or you will not be able to test) • Student must provide their high school name at registration, and the HS will automatically receive the score report. Send Scores to the Colleges of Your Choice • Your student is responsible for selecting the colleges that receive your scores (and ordering additional score reports if necessary) • Make sure that Elkhorn South receives a copy Test Preparation • A list of test preparation companies is available on the ESHS Counseling Center website or stop in the ESHS Counseling Center

  10. Step 4: Request a Transcript • The student must request the transcript through their counselor • Transcriptscontain your student’s: • GPA • class rank • course history • a list of classes in progress

Step 5: Ask for letters of recommendation (as needed) • Help your student identify adults who will give him/her a positive recommendation • Provide two weeks notice to the teachers • Make sure your student gives the person writing the letter a resume or a list of accomplishments • Encourage your student to write a thank you note when the letter is complete Remember, your student is responsible for obtaining and delivering the letters!!!

Other Considerations Scholarships • Apply throughout your senior year • Local vs. National • Renewable and Nonrenewable • Financial Planning Night on January 19th • Educationquest College Athletics • NCAA Division I or II register with: www.eligibilitycenter.org • NAIA register with: www.PlayNAIA.org • ACT scores must come directly from ACT • See your counselor if you have questions • MAKE SURE YOU REGISTER as a student attending ELKHORN SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL in Omaha, Nebraska
