  1. Climate Change Science and Solutions Creating innovative education tools for Native Americans and other rural Communities on the Colorado Plateau Northern Arizona University Climate Change Education (CCE): Climate Change Education Partnership (CCEP) Program, Phase I (CCEP-I)

  2. What is Climate Science & Solutions Partnership? • CSSP is a National Science Foundation grant funded to create a climate change education program for secondary schools and communities on the Colorado Plateau. • CSSP will create a regionally and culturally relevant climate science and solutions curriculum for grades 6-12. • CSSP will produce climate change video clips and documentary-style film to complement educational programs.

  3. What is Climate Science & Solutions Partnership? • CSSP will be implemented in two phases: • Phase one will produce a high school pilot standards-based curriculum and video and will develop regional partnerships. • Phase two (pending funding) will produce and implement additional curriculum modules and will expand educational programs to communities and schools across the Colorado Plateau.

  4. Grant Goals • Goal 1: Establish a Climate Change Education Center at Northern Arizona University • Goal 2: Create a supplementary climate science and solutions curriculum for grades 6-12 that will initially be used in classrooms across the Colorado Plateau. • Goal 3: Create professional development programs for teachers. • Goal 4: Educate parents, community leaders, and school boards about climate change.

  5. Educational Tracks • A formal, standards-based, regionally and culturally relevant classroom curricular supplement ideal for high school earth science classrooms • Creating community education programs including providing educational materials for alternative energy installations

  6. Projected changes in median runoff for 2041-2060 relativeto1901-1970 baseline, mapped by water region. Hatched areas indicate greater confidence due to strong agreement among models.

  7. Our Partners • A team of climate scientists from Northern Arizona University comprising biological, earth, and political scientists • Education experts promoting STEM Learning (NAU Center for Science Teaching and Learning, Applied Indigenous Studies & Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals, Biological Sciences Curriculum Studies (BSCS)) • Education practitioners including a consortium of 6-12 schools that serve Native and rural students & the Diné and Hopi Department’s of Education • Regional community groups dedicated to developing regional solutions to climate change in northern Arizona and on the Navajo Nation, include the Black Mesa Water Coalition (BMWC) and Diné Binaanish Yá'át'éehgo Nooséél (DBYN)/Navajo Green Jobs(formerly the Navajo Green Economy Coalition, and future partner Tó Nizhoní Aní).

  8. Objectives • NAU CCEP to work with Earth Science teachers during summer of 2011 to include climate change pilot module in pacing guide. • NAU CCEP to work with Earth Science teachers during 2011-2012 academic years to pilot climate change high school module. • NAU CCEP to provide educational programs, materials, and support for feasibility and installation study, while partners Black Mesa Water Coalition (BMWC), Diné Binaanish Yá'át'éehgo Nooséél (DBYN)/Navajo Green Jobs, and Solar Mosaic conduct feasibility study and eventual installation plans for solar and/or wind energy on district property. This project would involve community educational components at every level of development and implementation.
