  2. History Of animal testing Tracked back to Ancient Roman and Greeks Great Britain and the U.S. in the 1800s Happened mostly due to Charles Darwin’s “on the original species”

  3. Types of animal testing In Virtro Testing The LD50 test: Giving a group of animals substances until half dies. The Draize test: Placing substances into eyes or onto the skin.

  4. Animals being tested Rabbits and rodents for Draize Pigs for cardiovascular system Farm animals for safety ingestion

Products (companies) using animal testing • Clorox • ArmorAll, Formula 409, Fresh Step, Glad, Liquid Plumber, Pine-Sol, Soft Scrub, S.O.S., Tilex • Johnson & Johnson • Aveeno, Clean & Clear, Listerine, Lubriderm, Neutrogena, Rembrandt, ROC • S.C. Johnson and Son • Drano, Edge, Fantastik, Glade, OFF!, Oust, Pledge, Scrubbing Bubbles, Shout, Skintimate, Windex, Ziploc

Animal testing failures • Flosint • Treatment for arthritis • Marketed in the United Kingdom in September 1982 • Proven affective on animals but caused death in humans • Thalidomide in 1950’s and 1960’s • Given to pregnant women to help reduce morning sickness • 10,000 birth defects and thousands of fetal death • Babies suffer from Phocomelia; Referred to as “Flipper Babies.”

ASPCA ASPCA- The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Founded by Henry Bergh First humane society to be established in North America and is, today, one of the largest in the world Caring for pet parents and pets, providing positive outcomes for at-risk animals and serving victims of animal cruelty.

  9. PETA • PETA- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals • Helps where animal suffers most • Factory farms • Laboratories • Clothing trade • Entertainment industry • Other issues: Cruel killing of beavers, birds and other “pests” and the abuse of dogs
