  2. Within any society people: • Organized in Groups • Classified in categories

  3. Group and Category • Group: “the essence of group is that individuals making it up have both rights and obligations to behave in specified ways.” (Pit Corder, p.166) • Category: “collection of individuals considered by their fellows to have something in common.” (Pit Corder, 1975: p.166)

  4. Members of a group have rights & obligations to behave in specified ways. • Groups example: • members of one family • Church community • Political party

  5. “in our society, men and women are expected to behave in different ways according to their sex, but this does not imply that they have characteristics of a group as defined earlier.” (Pit Corder, p. 166)

  6. Category and classification, example: • Women Liberation Movement

  7. Geographical Dialect • Geographical dialect means: • survey of particular dialect word or sound system village by village or... • Whole language survey aiming at plotting the distribution of particular language across the country or larger area.

  8. Geographical boundaries (rivers, mountains) dialect boundaries • Communication and development of transportation lead to decrease of such variations.

  9. Social Dialect • Three kinds of social inequality: • Differences in wealth and income (class) • Differences in prestige or status (RP accent) • Unequal distribution of power

  10. Accent vs. Dialect • Accent (form of speech differs from others) • Dialect (diff. In phonology, grammar & lexis)
