Empowering Women in West Mosul: Challenges, Needs, and Opportunities

This report summarizes the findings of a focus group discussion held by the M&E department with 93 women in West Mosul. The aim was to understand the challenges, obstacles, and needs for empowering women to enter the workforce. The discussions covered topics such as job availability, suitable jobs for women, obstacles in finding employment, and vocational training opportunities.

Summary • Objective: To Understand Challenges, Obstacles and Needs for Empowering Women to Enter the Workforce • Approach: Labour Market Assessment in West Mosul via Focus Groups • Timeframe: October 2018 • Methodology: • Total of 93 Women Participated • Ten (10) Focus Groups in Five (5) West Mosul Neighborhoods: Zanjily, Mosul aljdida, Tayran, Wadi Hajr and Nabis • Two (2) Focus Groups in Each Neighbourhood • Assessment Methodology, FGDs, Analysis and Report completed by RNVDO Monitoring & Evaluation Department

Outcomes • Chance to work and job availability • Suitable jobs for women • Obstacles in finding a job • Skills are needed in market • Help that might women need • Vocational training can enable to start a business • Vocational training of interest to women • Main obstacles that women face in finding a job

Key Findings • Majority of participants have ability and wanted to work and have a job • All the participants choose the most suitable jobs as: 1) sewing; 2) pastry; and 3) cooking • Women also identified work opportunities in the medical field, such as needle injection and first aid • Women also chose hairdressing and teaching as suitable jobs • Majority (88%) of women who participate in FGD are not working, with only few involved in sewing or as guards in school

Key Findings • Women reported many obstacles to obtaining livelihoods, with nepotism as the most-cited reason for not being able to work • Women noted a lack of jobs and capital, followed by community-family rejection • Women acknowledged that a lack of capacity as the least experienced obstacle • A majority of women said the labour market needs the following skilled workers: English language, computer and sewing • Some respondents said hairdressing, certificate, and making pastry are needed skills to find job for women

  7. Key Findings • All participants agreed that they need the help • A majority said they need jobs opportunities or cash assistance • Others said a need for large sewing factories or distribution of equipment to support starting own businesses, and to include training

Key Findings • Most attendees chose vocational training that would enable them to start a business or finding a job, such as pastry making and sewing • Some respondents recommended English courses, beauty salon and literacy • A minor number of respondents said said handcraft, computer and medical training • The interested Vocational Trainings for FGDs attendees, in order: • Medical "needle injection and first aid " • Computer using • Driving cars • Pastry making • Sewing • Literacy • Fitness • Salon
