  1. NAME _________________________ NAME _________________________ NAME _________________________ Problem-solving with MATLAB Week 4: Computing volumes: cubic feet, gallons, measuring water

  2. Building a swimming pool Suppose you are building a swimming pool 30 ft long, 15 ft wide and 4 ft deep. a) Edge tiles are 1 ft long and go around the entire edge of the pool. They cost $2.39 each. How much is the total cost of all the edge tiles? b) Evaporation from the pool depends on the surface area of water next to air. What is this surface area in sq ft? (Similar to part of our Lake Lansing problem.)

  3. Swimming pool problem continued c) The concrete contractor says you need 3 cubic yards of concrete. How many cubic ft is this? If each cubic ft of concrete weighs 200 pounds, how much does all the concrete weigh? (Think carefully about how many cubic ft are in one cubic yard.) d) The fire company will fill up your pool for 5 cents per gallon. How much will this cost you? (First, write down in English how you will compute this.)

  4. How many gallons in Lake Lansing? • See the figure below • Lake surface area in square ft _________ • How computed? ____________________ • Average lake depth in ft ______________ • Volume of lake in cubic ft _____________ • How computed? ____________________ • Volume of lake in gallons _____________ • How computed? ____________________
