  4. Bollywood’s Popularity • 2000’s : increase of popularity • Bollywood movies: influence on musical films in the Western World • Strong in Africa: similar cultures… but “OldBollywood” more popular than the “ChangingBollywood” • Most of the Arab world also enjoy Bollywood.

  5. Bollywood’s Popularity • Popular in the former Soviet Union (non-controversial and non-political movies). Mithun Chakraborty is adored by many. • Frequently in the top 10 in UK, popular in the US too. This because of the huge Indian Diaspora.

  6. Reasons for success • Films that appeal to all segments of the audience • For the last few decades: release of the film's soundtrack, as tapes or CDs, before the main movie release. Goal: To pull audiences into the cinema later. But often, the soundtrack is more popular than the movie…
