  3. Two Components of aSeptic System • Abandon the tank(s) • Leave the field lines in the ground What has to be done?

  4. Three Methods ofAbandoning Tanks Method #1 • Pump and dispose of contents; • Collapse, crush & demolish tank walls and lid; • Leave rubble in the ground; • Backfill hole with gravel to within 12” of the ground surface; • Backfill remaining void with soil up to the ground surface.

  5. Three Methods ofAbandoning Tanks Method #2 • Pump and dispose of contents; • Collapse, crush & demolish tank walls and lid; • Completely remove rubble from the premises; • Dispose of rubble in an appropriate manner; • Backfill hole with soil up to the ground surface.

  6. Three Methods ofAbandoning Tanks Method #3 • Pump and dispose of contents; • Completely fill tank with an appropriate material; • Example: gravel, concrete, etc. • Backfill any remaining hole with soil up to the ground surface.

  7. Qualified Contractors • State-permitted pumping contractors • (refer to WCDSDM web site for list) • Do not have to be WC-licensed septic system installers • Certified & licensed plumbers • (refer to City of Franklin for approved list) Who can do the work?

  8. Approval Process • No fee or permit required from WC; • Provide proof of pumping to WCDSDM; • Notify WCDSDM after abandonment but prior to final grading; • WCDSDM will inspect, confirm & approve the abandonment.
