  3. Latin Name: Averroes

  4. Averroes • In 1169, while in Marrakesh, Morocco, Averroes was asked by the Almohad ruler to provide an interpretation of Aristotle’s writings. • Averroes spent from 1169 to 1195 (almost 30 years) writing commentaries on Aristotle’s writings. • Commentaries were a common form of scholarly writings in which one philosopher provided a more intelligible interpretation of another philosopher’s writings, usually within the context of a given religious system of belief.

  5. Averroes the “Commentator” • Aristotle is a Greek philosopher who live 384-322 BCE. • His writings were esoteric and intelligible only to the best philosophical minds. • Aristotle’s writings were not well known to Western theologians and philosophers; they became available because of the Arabic and Islamic influence of Spain. • To the Western Christian theologians and philosophers Averroes became known as the “Commentator” and Aristotle “the Philosopher”. • Averroes’ commentaries became very popular to medieval Christians and were countered by St. Thomas Aquinas’ Commentaries.

  6. Introduction • What is philosophy? • What is theology? • What is reason? • What is faith? • What is the difference between natural and revealed theology?

  7. Philosophy vs. Theology • Philosophy or natural theology studies ultimate reality (first cause, the nature of the Divine, etc.) through reason and experience. • Revealed theology studies ultimate reality (first cause, the nature of the Divine, etc.) through scripture, interpreted as the word of God.

  8. Reason and Faith • Reason can have many different interpretations. • In this religious context, we should understand it broadly to mean a human being’s natural intellect and sensory experiences, or the faculties that we use to understand and learn about religious beliefs.

  9. Reason and Faith • Faith may also have many different interpretations. • Faith refers to way of believing something, specifically a belief that lacks evidence for its being true. • In this context, we are referring to religious faith or belief in the existence of God and other religious doctrines, such as that the world was created, there is an afterlife (heaven and hell), etc.

  10. Reason vs. Faith • Reason uses demonstrations or arguments (objective evidence) as the method for arriving at belief. • Faith uses a certain degree of trust as the basis for arriving at belief.
