  2. 3.1 - Naming Compounds • Molecular Compounds (Compounds with nonmetals only): • Write the name of each element that is present • Change the end of the second element to “-ide” • Use prefixes to indicate the number of atoms of each element that is present

  3. Ionic Compounds (Compounds with a metal and a nonmetal): • Write the name of the metal and the nonmetal • Change the ending of the nonmetal name to “-ide” • If the metal is one that has more than one possible charge, indicate the charge value using a roman numeral

  4. 3.2 – Ionic Compounds • Ionic compounds are formed from charged ions that are attracted to each other • Ions form when metals give away electrons to become positive, or when nonmetals gain electrons to become negative • Therefore, when two elements react to form an ionic compound, the metal donates its electrons (becoming positive) and the nonmetal accepts those electrons (becoming negative)

  6. 3.3 – Molecular Compounds • Molecular compounds form when two nonmetal elements bond together • The bond in a molecular compound is formed when the two nonmetals share electrons between them

  7. Why Share? • Atoms want to have 8 electrons present in their outer energy level (think of the Bohr model of the atom) • Nonmetals can obtain 8 if they share electrons • For instance, oxygen has 6 electrons, and carbon has 4…
