Key Points • A smart mob is a form of self-structuring social organization through technology-mediated, intelligent emergent behavior. • Mobile Phones are reaching to the place where PC’s don’t have reach. • Marriage between Internet and Mobile Phones is not merely to browse Internet. • Moores law: Today handheld devices are more powerful and cheaper than yesterday Computers.

  4. Key Points • Tomorrow’s Killer application does not run in sophisticated hardware / software systems but they will be social concepts. • Technology is mere a platform to enable the Application • It’s the society that decides the fit of the application.

Examples of Smart Mobs • Smart Mobs in Manila , Overthrew the presidency of president Estrada in 2001 organized demonstrations by forwarding text messages by cell phones • In 1999 , Autonomous but inter-networked squads of demonstrators protested the meetings against WTO using Mobile Phones , websites etc.. • Collaborative computing like 2 Million people donate Untapped CPU time on their PC’s to analyze signals collected by radio telescope in Puerto Rico , Napstar etc.

Evaluation • A good read if it was read within a year from the date of release. • Most of the concepts are reality. • Very Good examples. • No Direct Business Value for our class, Indirectly some of those could be used to design next generation applications. • Location Based Services are now already in the market.
