  3. What is Bar Mitzvah Think about all the things you can do when you reach your 16th birthday… It’s a big changing point in many teenager’s lives as they are allowed to do different things and are given extra responsibilities

  4. What is Bar Mitzvah • Jewish boys and girls have a special birthday soon after they start secondary school. It is 13 for a boy and 12 for a girl. • Boys become Bar Mitzvah and girls Bat Mitzvah (Son or Daughter of the Commandments). • Most families hold a celebration. Relatives may come a long way. The whole family may attend a ceremony at the synagogue.

  5. What Happens at Bar Mitzvah • Boys can read from the Torah for the first time. In Reform Judaism girls also do this but not in Orthodox synagogues. http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone/clips/bar-mitzvah/7469.html • From now on it is their responsibility to carry out their duties to their family and to their religion. • Jewish boys are given a prayer shawl (tallit) and they now wear the tefillin.

  6. Task Imagine you are a 13 year old Jewish boy who has just attended his Bar Mitzvah – write a post card to relatives who live in Israel explaining what happened and how you felt on this special day. When you have finished draw a scene from your Bar Mitzvah ceremony.

  7. Extension Write a paragraph describing a day in your life which was special. Explain why it was important and how you felt.

  8. Finally!!! What can a Jewish boy do after his Bar Mitzvah that he could not do before?
