  2. What is Dementia? • Dementia – is a brain disease, that causes damage to a persons’ brain. • The disease means a person gradually loses control of what they are able to do or say.

  3. Common forms of dementia There are different forms of dementia : – Alzheimer's disease 62% Vascular dementia 17% Alzheimer’s and Vascular mix 10% Parkinson disease 2% Other 4% These stats were taken from the Alzheimer's web page (Handout)

  4. How is a person affected? • Memory loss, problems concentrating • Difficulty completing regular tasks at home • Confusion with time and places • Trouble understanding visual images – TV programs • Difficulty with judging distances • Misplacing things and not being able to retrace them • Changes in moods and personality • Not being able to explain things

  5. The emotional effects of dementia • Fear • Denial • Guilt • Frustration • Anger • Sadness • Embarrassment • Feelings of despair & hopelessness

  6. The main two dementias Alzheimers Disease During the course of the disease plaque develops in the structure of the brain. The chemicals that needs to transmit message to these cells cannot, due to the death of these brain cells. Hence the reason for memory loss and the gradual progressiveness of the disease Medication can be given…

  7. Vascular Dementia This dementia occurs when a blood vessel in the vascular system is blocked due to a blood clot or damage occurs with one of the vessels. The blood supply cannot reach to the brain cells and so the cell eventually dies.

  8. How can we support a person with dementia? • Try to remember that the person you are caring for is not being deliberately difficult • Try to remain calm & try to distract them with calming activities, i.e. play their favourite music, Reassure, support & respect • Look for the cause of distress
