  2. Favourite books • We all have favourite books: • Harry Potter? • Winnie the Pooh? • Charlie and the Chocolate factory? • Which is your favourite book?

  3. Special Books • Most communities and families have special books. • School Log book- where the headteacher looks back at what has happened in school. • Wedding album- collection of special photographs

  4. All these books help us to remember or celebrate together as a group.

  5. Church • A Church has many special books • Prayer books • Missals • Bibles • Hymn Books • These books help us to celebrate and worship and to remember what Jesus did.

  6. Special Books • Almost every religion in the world has a special book. • For Muslims it is the Qu’ran

  7. Jewish Torah • For Jews it is the Torah

  8. Guru Granth Sahib • For Sikhs it is the Guru Granth Sahib

  9. Hindu Vedas • For Hindus it is the five Vedas

  10. The Holy Bible • For Christians it is the Holy Bible

The Bible: a library of books • The Bible is a compilation of 66 distinct “books.” • Written over a 2,000-year span • Written on three continents • Written in three languages (Hebrew, Greek and Latin) • Written by more than 40 authors, from different walks of life • Translated into 330 languages

  12. The Holy Bible • Is like a guidebook • It shows us the right way to live • It helps us on our faith journey through life

  13. Words • Most books have hundreds of words in them. • Words are very important • In the Bible, Saint John actually calls Jesus “the Word” • He says, “And the Word became flesh and lived among us.”

  14. John • John also tells us that there would not be enough books in the whole world to tell us everything about Jesus. • He says, “There are many… things that Jesus did. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that could be written.”

  15. Books of the Bible • The Bible is split into the Old Testament and the new Testament • Each contains several “books” • There are 39 books in the Old Testament • There are 27 books in the New Testament

  16. OLD TESTAMENT

  17. Old Testament • Pentateuch- first five books of the Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy) are the Jewish holy books.

  18. Historical • Historical Books-include Joshua, Judges, Ruth, Samuel, Kings, the Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Tobit, Judith, Esther and the Maccabees. • There are many great stories of kings and battles here. We hear the story of the Jewish people setting up their country and the wars they fought.

  19. Wisdom • These books include beautiful poems and songs: • Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, The Song of Songs, the book of Wisdom and Ecclesiasticus.

  20. Prophets • There were many people who talked to God and explained how His people should live. Sometimes they got into trouble for it! • The prophets are: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Baruch, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi.

New Testament • This tells us about Jesus’ life- a bit like an biography • The Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John- tell us about Jesus’ life. • Acts of the Apostles- tells us what happened after Jesus left his disciples and gives a view of the early Church. • Letters- from St Paul, James, Peter, John and Jude- they deal with how we should live and our relationship with God. • Book of Revelation- written by St John- tells us about a vision of the end of the world.

Dear Lord,Books can be tasty treats for our minds.They can help us stay happy and alive with interest in the world around us.They are good to share and to enjoy alone.Thank you for all the many books in our schools and libraries and for the writers and illustrators who inspire us, make us laugh and teach us new things.Help us to find books that teach us to be wise, kind and to know more about the world that you have given us.Amen. • Let us Pray:
