  1. Christian Foundational Truths The Holy Spiritis the Power Lesson 6

  2. The Holy Spirit and Christ Luke 4:14-15 And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit; and news about Him spread through all the surrounding district. And He {began} teaching in their synagogues and was praised by all. (NAS) Luke 3:21-22 Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus was also baptized, and while He was praying, heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, "You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased." (NASB) Matthew 12:28 "But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. (NAS) Luke 4:1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness (NASB) • The Holy Spirit was the agent of Christ’s conception. • The Holy Spirit’s sustaining ministry to the incarnate Christ was prophesied in the Old Testament. • The Holy Spirit was given without measure to Christ. • The Holy Spirit had a special relationship to Christ during Christ’s earthly public ministry. • The Holy Spirit provided the power of Christ's earthly ministry. Matthew 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows. When His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. (NAS) Isaiah 11:2-3 And the Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and strength, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. And He will delight in the fear of the LORD and He will not judge by what His eyes see, nor make a decision by what His ears hear; (NAS) John 3:34 "For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for He gives the Spirit without measure. (NAS)

  3. The Holy Spirit and Christ Matthew 3:11 "As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. (NAS) • The Holy Spirit was actively involved in Christ's resurrection. • The Holy Spirit provided the power for the resurrection ministry of Christ. • As the Holy Spirit empowered Jesus Christ during His earthly ministry, so He empowered the Apostles to Israel, Paul, the Apostle to the gentiles and other selected believers until the end of the first century AD. Romans 1:4 who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord, (NAS) Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who indwells you. (NAS) 1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, {the} just for {the} unjust, in order that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; (NAS) Acts 1:2 until the day when He was taken up, after He had by the Holy Spirit given orders to the apostles whom He had chosen. (NAS)

  4. The Spirit in the Old Testament • The Holy Spirit has always sustained all life • He has worked differently in the lives of individual men and women in different ages. • The Holy Spirit is directly mentioned in Scripture only five times in the period before Abraham • In the time between Abraham and Christ - the Age of Israel - the Holy Spirit came upon certain men, usually for the purpose of revealing truth or preparing or empowering for service. Job 27:3 3 For as long as life is in me and the breath of God is in my nostrils, (NAS) Job 33:4 4 "The Spirit of God has made me and the breath of the Almighty gives me life. (NAS)

  5. The Spirit in the Old Testament 1 Corinthians 3:16 16 Do you not know that you are a temple of God and {that} the Spirit of God dwells in you? (NAS) 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God and that you are not your own? 20 For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body. (NAS) Romans 8:9 9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. (NAS) Galatians 3:2 2 This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? (NAS) Galatians 4:6 6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" (NAS) • Believers could obtain the Holy Spirit by asking BUT they could also have Him taken from them. • In the Age of Christianity the Holy Spirit permanently indwells every believer. 2 Kings 2:9-10 9 Now it came about when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, "Ask what I shall do for you before I am taken from you." And Elisha said, "Please, let a double portion of your spirit be upon me." 10 And he said, "You have asked a hard thing. {Nevertheless,} if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be {so.}" (NAS) Luke 11:13 13 "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall {your} heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?" (NAS) Psalms 51:11 11 Do not cast me away from Thy presence and do not take Thy Holy Spirit from me. (NAS)

  6. The Holy Spirit • “The Spirit of truth” • “The Spirit of wisdom and understanding” • “The Spirit of counsel and strength” • “The eternal Spirit” • “Spirit of glory” • “Spirit of life” • “Spirit of holiness • “Spirit of wisdom • “Spirit of grace” Hebrews 10:29 29 How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified and has insulted the Spirit of grace? (NAS) Romans 1:4 4 who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord, (NAS) Ephesians 1:17 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. (NAS) Isaiah 11:2 2 And the Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and strength, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. (NAS) Hebrews 9:14 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? (NAS) 1 Peter 4:14 14 If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. (NAS) Romans 8:2 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. (NAS)

  7. The Holy Spirit • The Spirit will bear witness of Christ. • First, He will bear witness to the believer. • Then the Holy Spirit bears witnesses through us.

  8. The Holy Spirit 2 Corinthians 5:14-21. For the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died; and He died for all, that they who live should no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf. Therefore from now on we recognize no man according to the flesh; even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know {Him} {thus} no longer. Therefore if any man is in Christ, {he is} a new creature the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. Now all {these} things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were entreating through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. He made Him who knew no sin {to be} sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (NAS) • We must listen to the Holy Spirit’s witness to us before we have anything to say to a lost and hurting world. • If we have denied the Spirit’s ministry to us, how can we expect Him to have a ministry through us to other people? • How can we hope to tell other people that the Holy Spirit is the answer if we are confused ourselves? • How can we hope to give other people encouragement if we are discouraged?

  9. The Holy Spirit John 16:8-11 8 "And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer behold Me; 11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. (NAS) ejlevgcw (elegcho) “to expose,” “to convince”, “to reprove” “to totally and completely refute an opponent” • Sin. The sin here is unbelief. • Righteousness. The righteousness is the victory of Jesus Christ on the cross. • Judgment. The judgment is the eternal separation from God which is coming because Satan, the ruler of this world, has been judged. 1 Peter 5:8 8 Be of sober {spirit,} be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. (NAS) Revelation 12:10 10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, "Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, who accuses them before our God day and night. (NAS) John 8:44 44 "You are of {your} father the devil and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own {nature;} for he is a liar and the father of lies. (NAS)

  10. The Holy Spirit • He will NOT tell you where Cain got his wife. • He will NOT give you the illumination to answer the exact time of the writing of the book of Daniel. • He will NOT tell you whether there were two or three Isaiah’s. • All He wants the unbeliever to know is, • it is a sin to reject Jesus Christ; • the only righteousness that counts with God is what Christ won on the cross; • Satan has been judged and if you reject Christ, you will share Satan’s destiny.

  14. Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. (AV) (KJV) But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. (NAS) So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. (NIV) I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. (NKJ) But I say, walk by the Spirit, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. (RSV) 14

"Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya around Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-- we hear them in our {own} tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God."
