  2. Priorities The Rivanna Conservation Society is committed to the protection and enhancement of the Rivanna River Basin's water quality and water quantity

  3. Central Themes The Board of Directors may create committees and work groups to carry out the programs and projects of the organization. These include the; • Advocacy & Community Involvement • Conservation & Recreation • Development & Resources • Education & Outreach • Human Resources & Organizational Management

  4. Mission To develop public support to safeguard the ecological, recreational, cultural, scenic and historic resources of the Rivanna River Watershed.

  5. Problem Statement Human activities within the Rivanna River basin are increasing, placing pressure on the environment, natural habitat, and [both] water quality and quantity.

  6. Board of Directors • The Board of Directors is composed of persons who are members of the organization and who are dedicated to the mission and goals of the RCS. • Officers (President, Vice President, Treasurer,) are members of the Board of Directors elected annually by the RCS Board of Directors.

  7. Board of Directors • The role of the Board of Directors is to set policy, determine priorities, establish the annual budget, approve the dues structure and provide organizational and personnel oversight. • The Board and Executive Director will continually focus on organizational capacity building.

  8. Advocacy & Community Involvement • Legislation • Regulation • Policy • Ordinances CHARGE: To work with government and non-government groups to promote projects, programs, policy and legislation to improve the health of the Rivanna River Watershed.

Conservation & Recreation • Buffer Plantings • Clean-ups • Kiosk Maintenance • River Paddles CHARGE: To arrange for and implement riparian buffer plantings, host shoreline and in-stream clean-ups, provide & expand river access points, maintain the network of RCS Kiosks, & to conduct river paddles.

Development and Resources • Fund Raising • Board Development • Internal Operations CHARGE: To secure the fiscal resources necessary to successfully operate the organization; to work with the Executive Director to establish sound fiscal & operational procedures, & to facilitate board & personnel development & training.

Education & Outreach • Education Programs • Media Relations • Public Involvement Projects • Water Quality Monitoring CHARGE: To create & implement educational programs & public involvement projects designed to safeguard the ecological, recreational, cultural, scenic & historic resources of the Rivanna River Watershed.

Human Resources & Organizational Management • Executive Director Oversight • Fiscal and Organizational Policy Recommendations • Personnel Policy Recommendations to Board CHARGE: To work with the Executive Director maintain oversight of the organization’s operations, identify and or revise needed policies and procedures, and recommend such policies to the Board of Directors.

Executive Director The Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day management of the organization, including; • Board Support, Data management, Fiscal management Inter-organizational coordination, Member services Personnel management, Press & Media Interface, Project Management, Website & Social Media Management.

  14. Projects & Programs ADVOCACY • Government/Legislative Relations • Candidates Forum • Issues Policy Recommendation to the Board – e.g. Development Permitting, Stormwater Projects, TMDL’s, and other issues that arise.

  15. Projects & Programs CONSERVATION & RECREATION • Buffer & Restoration Programs • Kiosk Construction & Maintenance • River Clean Ups & Makeovers • River Guardians and River Stewards • River Paddles/River Regatta/River Sojourn • Scheier Natural Area Programs

  16. Projects & Programs EDUCATION & OUTREACH • Earth Week, Kid-Vention & Old Farm Day Events • Booths & Exhibits • Community Lecture Series • Water Health for the Commonwealth • Water Quality Monitoring

Projects & Programs HUMAN RESOURCES & ORGANIZATIONAL MANAGEMENT • Provide Executive Director Guidance and prepare annual review report for board consideration and action, • Provide Fiscal and Organizational Policy Recommendations to the board of directors, • Periodically review Personnel Policies and Organizational Manuals and guidelines with recommendations to the board of directors as needed.
