  2. 1900’s • Born on December 5, 1901, in Würzburg, Germany • Dr. August and Anna Heisenberg are Werner’s parents • His father was professor of Greek language and literature

  3. 1910’s • Entered the Maximilians-Gymnasium in Munich in September 1911 • Impressed his teachers with his sheer intelligence • October 1927, Heisenberg accepted appointment as professor of theoretical physics at the University of Leipzig, Germany

  4. 1920’s • June 1922: Bohr and Heisenberg First Meet-Heisenberg challenges Bohr during Gottingen lecture series • September 1924: begins research fellowship at Bohr's institute in Copenhagen • 1927: Bohr and Heisenberg Defend Principles of Complementarity at Volta Conference, Lake Como • October 1927, Heisenberg accepted appointment as professor of theoretical physics at the University of Leipzig, Germany

  5. 1930’s • December 11, 1933: receives 1932 Nobel Prize for Physics

  6. 1940’s • September 1941: travels to occupied Copenhagen to meet with Bohr • May 3, 1945: Heisenberg Arrested Werner Heisenberg is arrested by invading U.S. forces at his home in Urfeld, Germany • May-October 1945: Heisenberg Held at Farm HallHeisenberg held in custody with other German atomic scientists at Farm Hall, an estate in England. Their conversations are secretly taped.

  7. 1950’s • 1956: Heisenberg's Version Published Heisenberg's version of 1941 meeting with Bohr is published in Jungk's "Brighter Than a Thousand Suns.“ • 1957-1958: Bohr Reads Heisenberg's AccountBohr drafts response to Heisenberg's account in Jungk's book of their meeting in 1941. Letter is never sent. Werner Heisenberg Niels Bohr Wolfgang Pauli

  8. 1970’s • February 1, 1976; Werner Heisenberg DiesHeisenberg dies at home in Munich with family and friends.

FACTS • Heisenberg's name will always be associated with his theory of quantum mechanics, published in 1925, when he was only 23 years old • For this theory and the applications of it which resulted especially in the discovery of allotropic forms of hydrogen • Since 1953 his own theoretical work was concentrated on the unified field theory of elementary particles which seems to him to be the key to an understanding of the physics of elementary particles
