  6. Methodology “How did we do it and who did we talk to?” • 1,028 interviews were conducted over the internet among Intuit’s APD database. The sample was designed to achieve a mix of Lacerte, ProSeries, QBAE and non-Intuit product users. Total completes by segment are as follows: • Full Service - 452 • CFOs for Hire - 216 • Established Institutions - 83 • Hungry - 153 • Tax Driven - 198 • Content – 115 • Simple Pros - 83 • Other – 378, of which Outsourced Bookkeepers are 330 • Interviews were conducted late May, 2008 • Respondents were screened to ensure they are decision-makers or influencers of technology purchases in their firm • Results are weighted to reflect the actual incidence of Full Service and Tax Driven firms within the accountant market

  7. Accountant Age Generation X Shadow Boomers Average: 51.3 years Boomers Seniors Q34: Please enter your current age (n=1028)

  8. Self-Rated Technology Expertise • Nearly eight-in-ten (77%) respondents consider themselves advanced technology users, a slight increase from the 2005 study (70%) • Those younger than age 65 are more likely to consider themselves advanced users vs. those 65+ (though 62% of those 65+ consider themselves advanced) Q4: In thinking about how you USE technology products, which of the following statements best describes you? (n=1043)

  9. Role in Technology Decisions More than eight-in-ten respondents are the final decision-maker for technology decisions and have day-to-day technology responsibility How Firm Handles Technology Decisions Role in Technology Decisions Older respondents (55+) are more likely to be final decision makers than other segments Established Institutions and CFOs for Hire are more likely to be here than other segments Q3: Which of the following best describes how your firm handles the day-to-day technology needs of your firm? (n=1028) Q2: Which of the following best describes your role in the technology decisions made by your firm? (n=1028)

  10. Technology Attitudes • Accountants strongly agree they like technology and value its role in their lives • These attitudes have changed very little from the 2005 study with the exception of the percentage “valuing technology” having increased Those under age 45 are more likely to agree than those 55+ Est. Inst. are more likely to agree than other segments Tax Driven firms are more likely to agree than Full Service firms. ProSeries/non-QB using firms are most likely to agree Q5: How much do you agree or disagree that each of the following statements describes you when it comes to technology? (n=1028) Note: Strongly agree and agree have been combined; strongly disagree and disagree have been combined; and somewhat agree and somewhat disagree have been classified as neutral

  11. Features of Firm Website • Although only 29% of accountants have a website, all of these have the basics. One-in-five offers a secure portal • Very few offer the ability to pay for services, an opportunity for merchant services or an online payment option • No differences by segment, age, or product usage Q10: Which of the following features or capabilities does your firm’s website offer?(n=301) Base: Firm has website

  12. Online Financial Behaviors • Most accountants bank online, either through checking account balances or paying bills • This puts them ahead of the average American adult according the Pew Internet Life survey in September 2007 that said 53% have banked online These activities skew based on age, but very high % of those 55+ do them as well 11% buy/sell stocks / bonds / mutual bonds online, Pew (12/07) * Note: the sum for each item does not add to 100% due to a small percentage who are unaware of each technology Q19: Below is a list of technology products you may own or behaviors you may engage in for your personal life that require the use of technology. Please indicate whether you currently do each activity or are planning to do so in the future. (n=1028)

  13. Current Device Ownership With the exception of cell phones (or iPhones) with email and web capabilities which a fair number are still considering, accountants already own the consumer technologies in which they have an interest 89% own a cell phone vs. 75% of adult Americans, according to the Pew Internet Project (12/07) Ownership of all of these devices skew based on age, with the exception of the standard cell phone. Those under 55 are more likely to own them than those 55+ * Note: the sum for each item does not add to 100% due to a small percentage who are unaware of each technology Q19: Below is a list of technology products you may own or behaviors you may engage in for your personal life that require the use of technology. Please indicate whether you currently do each activity or are planning to do so in the future. (n=1028)

  14. Concern About Email Security Despite the fact that two-thirds (65%) of accountants email documents to clients without security, a strong majority (72%) have concerns about doing so Q11: Using a scale from 1 to 10, where 10 means “extremely concerned” and 1 means “not at all concerned,” how concerned are you about the security of the data as it is transmitted via email? (n=663) Base: Email documents to clients with no security/encryption

  15. Communication & Data Exchange Behaviors in Professional Life Consideration of websites, secure portals and encrypted email offers growth opportunities for these technologies These activities skew based on age (< 55) Q9: Below is a list of behaviors you may engage in for your professional life that require the use of technology. Please indicate whether you currently do each activity or are planning to do so in the future. (n=1028)

  16. Scanning & Online Applications Behaviors in Professional Life • While more than half of accountants use scanners, only one-fourth are using source doc auto entry technology. • The high percentage that are not considering hosted applications is likely driven by concerns over data security. These activities skew based on age (< 55) * Note: the sum for each item does not add to 100% due to a small percentage who are unaware of each technology Q9: Below is a list of behaviors you may engage in for your professional life that require the use of technology. Please indicate whether you currently do each activity or are planning to do so in the future. (n=1028)

  17. Preference for Scanned Data Storage For accountants already using or considering using software to extract data from scanned documents, local data storage is most important to accountants, consistent with other findings in the study Data on software vendor secure server All data remains in office Accuracy is more important as long as data secured * Note: a third option was offered that was non-specific on data storage and made accuracy more important Q13: Currently there are several different software solutions available that allow you to scan in source documents (W2’s, 1099’s) and have the data imported into your tax program. These software solutions typically fall into one of two groups: A: After the source document is scanned in your office, a program on your PC extracts the data from the scanned image and exports the data in the tax program (all data remains in your office PC or network) B: After the source document is scanned in your office, the scanned image is transmitted via the internet to the software vendor’s server where the data resides and is imported into your tax program when necessary Which of these two options do you prefer?: (n=727) Base: Do or Considering Extracting Data for Tax Returns
